The Red Balloon

This isn’t a necessarily fashion related post.

Sometimes when I’m on the hamster wheel, I forget to breathe, to take it easy, to stop and play a little more… Since, little Moxy has been in the house (she runs and plays nonstop until she passes out), I’ve realized how long it’s been since I’ve played like there was nothing more important in the world to do. To run around and not care about anything, just play.

One of my latest fancies are red balloons…. have you ever seen the Albert Lamorisse film The Red Balloon? It’s about a boy who follows his red balloon around the streets of Paris… I saw it years ago, as a child, and the imagery has stayed with me. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I decided to follow my own ‘red balloon’. Various times throughout my life, the red balloon has been different things, but now I’m starting to feel as if it’s The Coveted…

Do you have your own ‘red balloon’, one that you wish you could pursue with abandon? What’s holding you back?

  1. I saw that movie as a child as well and it stuck with me too!

    I played hard last weekend….

Rented and rode a jet ski hard all day - it felt great to be a kid again.

  2. I think I know exactly what you mean…in my case, what holds me back is always security, I guess. But if you know what your Red Balloon is, go for it, who knows, maybe all that imagery and Paris will just materialize in front of your eyes!

  5. Men in top hats with a bundle of red balloons have been a coveted thing of mine for awhile ;)

As for my own “red balloon,” it would be filmmaking, for the pure intellectual, narcissistic pursuit of it. I believe my love of shoes, food, and traveling are what holds me back.

  6. My red balloon is working with refugees and new immigrants in Canada. It’s my longterm career goal. I just graduated so when I pay back my student loans and get some more life experience, I want to go get my master’s degree and work towards that goal.

Another less altruistic red balloon is somehow making crazy amounts of money or marrying into insane wealth. Ha.

  7. Hey Jennine, this is Jay Perez. My friend and I met you briefly at Kim’s place, and I must say that I really dig your blog. You are a stylish, stylish lady! I would be completely honored if you’d be a stylist for one of my very low budget photo shoots, or possibly even model! Unfortunately I don’t have an up and running website yet, but most of my work is on myspace. (myspace.com/j_peezee) If you have one, be sure to add me, or just hit me up at (Ballistika@aol.com)

Keep doin’ what you’re doin’, because your very, very good at it!

    Cheers, Jay P.

  10. j,
i can’t believe that i missed this post, i read your blog religiously because i really feel like i’m catching up with an old friend. you’re my blogspot soulmate! anyway, i find it that those red ballons i’ve been chasing aren’t worth chasing anymore and it makes me want to discover my hunger and passion even more. i’ve also started to realize that my blog is one of those balloons, and i would love to be a fashion stylist… i’m moving to los angeles in about a month, and i’m really going to pursue this… we only live once and this life is way tooo short to not follow those red balloons.

    xoxo.
