My Ideal Self

Yesterday on Style Alchemy, a post about WunderKind’s AW 07 collection resonated instantly with me. This collection made me think of what I aspire to in my personal style. There is nothing outrageous or gaudy about this collection, but it’s also very artful and beautiful. There are graceful lines and it’s sprinkled with play…. I mean, how could you not be playful sporting a red alpine hat?

The notion of the ideal self, I think I heard that in reference to Hitchcock’s leading characters, the James Stuart/Grace Kelly typical combination. At the time, it kind of ticked me off… “how dare someone desire a cool well-bred blonde!”. But the truth is, we all have elements of that. Emotionally, spiritually my ideal self is one of my friends/mentors, Lelan, a Texan, stylish, and always, I mean always, a lady… and she’s not afraid to have a bad day, and always does so graciously. I don’t know, this is just how I operate in life, I pick certain visual, spiritual, educational reference points and work towards them. It helps, but they also change with time.

Do you have an ‘ideal’ self? What inspires it?

  1. When it comes to fashion, and an ideal self, I ask (like many women do), “What would Carrie Bradshaw do?”

In fashion, I appreciate her ability to be outrageous, outside of the mainstream, while still maintaining an air of femininity, class, and style. Personally, I admire her ability to be vulnerable, experimental, emotional, intelligent, and straight-forward about what she wants from life, love, and herself. She has a beautiful mixture of maturity, playfulness, energy, vigor, toughness, and flexibility.

  2. Fashion is seen as a very superficial thing by most, I realize, but to me it’s so much more. It’s who I am, it’s the world seeing how I am inside, it’s how I present myself.

My ideal self is a confident and classy woman. The beautiful women of the thirties, forties, fifties, sixties who knew how to be sexy AND classy. They were beautiful. That’s very much where I draw inspiration from. But at the same time, I can modernize that strong look to look even stronger by drawing inspiration from Marianne Faithfull.

  4. hmm… on good days I am my ideal self! on bad days I wish I was thinner, taller, had more money to buy more sophisticated clothes and more shoes, but seriously, there are days where I feel like I am just right the way I am…
even if I’m not always sure if I could be as brave as her (speaking in terms of fashion), a woman I adore and admire for her style, her self-confidence and her magical aura is björk.
