Where does personal style come from? How do you know whether you are a master or a slave to fashion?
I don’t know the answer to that. Fashion156 featured an interesting quote on style…
According to model booker Sandra Robbins, “a style icon is someone who relates to ‘her time’ and dresses ‘in fashion’ with a personal twist/signature.”
It lead me to ask, who inspires me, style-wise? Admittedly I don’t know much about fashion, I’m learning every single day who designs what, or even about models (I just can’t keep up). I spent the majority of the morning contemplating who I find to be the most stylish, who, I would like to aspire to be like. It’s very difficult for me to chose an actress, or a model, simply because I’m not sure if they are the ones who make the decisions. They may be beautiful, but are they visually literate? With celebrity stylists and personal shoppers, I can admire the outfits, but with today it’s hard to tell
what’s real and what’s styled and Photoshop. (Even, I am Photoshopped… eh… sometimes).
The one person who I imagined could take my breath away, is Georgia O’Keefe. From early 20th Century Stieglitz portraits through her old age, she’s stunning. If ever there were a campaign for growing old naturally, she’s it… as I ponder how I can scrape the funds to start a botox habit, O’Keefe, shows me that beauty and style comes from something we can’t see. It’s a presence that permeates every section of our being. Of course, visual literacy helps… but those are only details.
So, I’ve shared my inspiration… who is yours? And why?

interestingly and relatedly, i wrote a blog entry in may about georgia o’ keeffe and her sense of personal style/how her aesthetic and philosophy on life permeated her outward appearance:

if you haven’t already read “portrait of an artist” by lisle about o’ keeffe, i highly recommend it.
thanks tricia, i missed that post… but, you’ve done well with writing about o’keefe.
: )
i’ll try to get that book, and read it.
Mina Loy. She made/designed her own clothing.
Also, Marchesa Luisa Casati.
Hey Jennine!
Wow, the Marchesa Luisa Casati has been my inspiration for years. I’m glad so many people have taken notice of her lately.
She became what she desired most, a living work of art.
It wasn’t about cookie cutter beauty, it was about the story she could tell thru fashion, the reaction of the public and the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary.
It was her attitude. It was intoxicating (or so i imagine)
The woman had balls.
(pardon my french, he hee…)
So, yes, she is who inspires me.
By the way, i loOoOove reading ur blog. It’s the only one i read, and i do it everyday.
Keep it up!

Cindy Sherman, particularly when she was younger (during the Untitled Film Stills series). There is something about her attitude, the way she interacts with the world, and adopts personaes, that I think I was emulating before I knew who she was (and similarly, through my photography when I was younger, too).
It’s possible you’ve inspired another post of me, lady.
wow, these are great women, i’m intrigued by mina loy, and casati… i want to learn more about them!
as far as cindy sherman, she’s wonderful, i just love her work, both the early days, and the renaissance ones.
I’m a big fan of both Frida Kahlo and Anna May Wong.
I’m too fashion schizophrenic to have just one style idol- I borrow a little from models, old-time Hollywood stars, well-dressed mannequins, funky commercials, nearly anything that crosses my path. My style is a hodgepodge of miscellany.
My fashion icons are Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley (very casual and down to earth looks). But if i had to choose another style icons i would go for Twiggy, Edie Sedgwick, Anna Wintour, Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn!

yeah it’s hard to tell whether a celebrity dressed herself or if she was styled.
Audrey Hepburn had beautiful style. I too, like the girl above with the hodgepodge style, take little bits of my style from everywhere. I would say that I love the way Kate Moss and the Olsen twins and Gemma Ward, and other fashionable women today, dress . . . but then I too would worry that many of the fashionable girls out there today have stylists.
