Fashion is lovely

Inside out…

Lately I’ve been noticing innovative uses of lingerie. Wearing strapless bras over your shirt… it’s nice, and I really would like to experiment with lingerie other than having my slip peeking out of every dress I own. In the New York Times fall style magazine, one of the spreads featured some interesting shoes (I cant figure out who made them) but also some interesting ways to wear lingerie over your clothes. I like the lacy bustier look, where it kind of functions as a tank, but prettier, and more structured.

When I went on my search for vintage bras, I found quite a selection online. None of them would fit me of course, but I don’t think proper fitting is essential. In fact, I’m wondering if it’s off a bit, it will keep from looking too much like your actual underwear. There is a costume shop with vintage clothes around the corner from my home, and I’ve been frequenting there looking for vintage girdles, but they are always too big. Now, I have a hankering for the strapless bras and bustier.

Here are some online boutiques I found have a good lingerie selection. There is always of course eBay… but I find them good to look at to get an idea of what kinds of lingerie is available.

Sleek’n'chic: Great selection
VintageSlips.com: Pricey, but great selection
Posh Girl Vintage One of my favorite places to look at
Heavenly Vintage Lingerie

  3. You know, I thought that black strapless bra was a Mickey Mouse “ear” hat for a second.

  7. Jennine, if you’re having troubles finding vintage girdles in the right size, I’d recommend these online sources: shapeu.com,littlepinkdress.com,and sleeknchic.com. I also recommend e-bay. I’m a size 6 and I wear vintage girdles with vintage and vintage-inspired clothes all the time. I love them. They are not uncomfortable if you wear the right size and they give you the right look and feel for vintage. Sometimes I cheat and just wear Spanx, which are great, but it is amazing what a good old-fashioned girdle can do. Anyway, all of those sources can provide vintage (often unworn deadstock) or new vintage-style girdles in either medium or small. Check them out!

  8. hi sara! thanks for the tips! i’ve been finding that spanx higher power is the best for me, my body is naturally straight, and i don’t have much of a waist… so these foundation garments are great for giving me that! although, i’ve never tried vintage girdles… wow…
    :)

  9. In summer, when I wear vintage dresses and skirts without stockings, I LIVE in spanx higher power. They’re great and they do give you a waist by nipping you in. I wear the girdles when I wear stockings, in colder months (I live in NY) and when I have to dress authentically for swing dancing or when I just want to look totally dynamite. For everyday wear, though, those spanx higher power are enough of a girdle for me (LOL)
