Maybe because I’m only 2 blocks away from City Lights Bookstore, or maybe because I’ve always been more fascinated by beatniks than hippys. But every time I wear a beret with a black turtleneck I feel like a beatnik.
Even though, I know nothing about poetry, and I’m not into mind-alteration. And I can’t even snap to a beat. Oh, and I’m not gay. So that pretty much blows all my counter-culture out the window!
Anyway, I told you guys the other day, that I could live in the AA turtleneck dress, and, well… that ain’t no lie. Here I’ve layered it with a cowl neck sweater and a beret because it’s super cold!
your outfit is cute, but please remember there was a lot more to the beat counterculture than black berets, poetry, and homosexuality. the beat generation was characterized by mad vagrancy and tossing responsibility, commitment, and obligation to the wind, not feeling guilt for walking away from anything once you wanted to walk away, etc. it was not characterized by homosexuality but about a freedom to pick and choose whatever you wanted when you wanted it.
thanks anonymous for your thoughtful comment. i was being cheeky when i was illustrating the beat generation. i’m sorry if it wasn’t well articulated.
Well, I’m going to AA tomorrow and try out that dress, you made it sound so good. Wish me luck!
a) beatnik is a pejorative term constructed from russia’s satellite “Sputnik” in order to ally the beats with communism.
b) beats made it possible for hippies to exist so…they’re almost the same thing in that the latter picked up the torch and then lit a joint with it and got docile.
