Argentinian artist, Irana Douer, reminds me of the beauty of laughing and crying at the same time. Reveling in the sick joy of messy emotions have always been a discrete or perhaps, at times, embarrassingly public pastime of mine. It’s really nice to see someone visually articulate mixed emotions in a world that is confused by complexity… or more likely afraid to understand.
Irana also has a great online magazine, Ruby Mag, that’s worth taking a look at particularly if you love contemporary art. And of course how can I forget to post a creation mixing both my obsessions… masks and cutouts…

On NYE my boyfriend and I were watching coverage of NYC’s Times Square countdown and I got all teary watching the many marriage proposals happening in front of the camera. I don’t want to get married! But, I am a sentimental sap at heart. Boyfriend was surprised to see my tears through my smile…thankfully he thought it was sweet and wasn’t scared. Love this art! One of my grad school prof’s made some lovely paper cut out art: http://renabranstengallery.com/Pijoan_Tour2.html.
Sadly, as I found this link also saw that she passed away a year after I graduated.
Your masks are beautiful! I love the mix of colors.
Beautiful beautiful illustrations…. like a more touching version of Daisy de Villeneuve’s work…
The masks - I love them! I also have a thing for cut outs.
=)
thanks
