Momento Mori

by jennine on January 22, 2008

Humans are always trying to recreate nature. Sometimes taxidermy is creepy, but other times it has an eternal feeling to it, like an ancestral link to a world far away. Julia de Ville of DisceMori designs all sorts of accessories inspired by Momento Mori jewelry of the 15th century. Some of it, I believe is a bit gruesome and brutal. But then again, we live in a world so removed from death. It’s really nice to see that this kind of work, where the pieces of death make life seem all that much more mysterious.

kim January 22, 2008 at 9:06 pm

one of the good brands. i have a big thing for feathers, draped chain, and bird bones- the brooch is brilliant. i make cuffs much like the black ones but i’d buy that other piece.

I find taxidermy very appealing, as a youngster I used to find it a little creepy, but that’s not the case now.

Congrats on the new site, by the way, it’s very aesthetically pleasing, though I hope you’ll still be present on blogger!
