Beautiful Tuesdays : Rainy Day Makeover

by jennine on February 26, 2008

Kezia:
On Saturday, Jennine and I played with colorful makeup from M.A.C’s new Fafi collection, brightening an otherwise dreary, rainy day with carefree colors.

When it comes to makeup, I’m a lightweight. My staples are tinted moisturizer, concealer, lip balm and black mascara. I’m ready to broaden my horizons. I’ve shied away from bright hues because I fear looking garish or drag queen-y. In fact, the last time I embraced serious color was probably middle school—when my mom forbade me to wear makeup. Her cosmetics ban only fueled my lust for eye shadow shades like aubergine frost and magenta magic lipstick (applied furtively in the bathroom before homeroom).

Jennine:
A few months back, Coutorture sent out a Smoky Eye Kit to all it’s members. Since I rarely wear anything more than mascara, this was the perfect time to try out the smoky eye look. I’ve never succeeded before without looking like I’ve been in a fist fight, but the directions included in the kit were helpful.

I’ve been using Mac’s cosmetics for over a decade, and I love them. It was really exciting to receive a box full of make-up in the mail. I wasn’t expecting even in the slightest! So if you have used MAC before, then you’ll know if you like the consistency and quality of the make up. While I liked to play around with the colors, like Kezia, I tended to go with what we normally like.. Violets and neutrals.

Spring-inspired colors

Kezia: These days, bright, vivid makeup is sheer and transparent, so you can wear as little (or as much) as you want. The whimsical Fafi collection features girly (yet wearable), intense colors ranging from corals to hot pinks (lips) and eye colors in energetic blues, greens and pinks. A pearly sheen adds a flattering, feminine glow.

I tried a few different looks: a bold, springtime face with Technicolor eyes and cheeks and a more subdued, but pearlescent, nude look (more in my comfort zone). See the images in this post for the results.

Kezia’s Fafi Faves:
Eyes
: Paint Pot in Layin’ Low (creamy beige). I applied it all over my lids and on my brow bone for an eye-popping effect. Adore the sheer, cream-to-powder texture.
Cheeks: Powder Blush in Hipness (intense coral with soft pearl). It looks day-glow in the packaging, but reads peaches and cream on my pale skin.
Lips
: Lipstick in Strawbaby (coral rose with rainbow pearl). This gleamy coral perfected my pout and warmed my complexion.

Jennine’s Fafi Faves:
Eyes: Nice Vice Paint Pot (violet) nice consistency, though the pots were difficult to open, Hey Eyeshadow Quad
Lips: Sugar Trance Lip Glass (of course, I love it, been using some form of lip glass for years)
Nail Polish: Boom! Frost varnish

Would I buy it?
I’d buy Nice Vice and Sugar Trance for sure… as always though, it’s fun to try different colors.

Gah! I am SO jealous of the amazing loot you received. The second look on Kenzia is lovely and fresh, while I’m really loving the way your eyes look in the second picture.

I ADORE MAC! Mac is my favorite brand, I trust anything and everything they make (except for their mascara - too clumpy). Nars is also a new fave now. They have both great consistensies and colors, and stay on your face like they were meant to.
