I’m sick of bags. For the past few years, I’ve been coveting the bags of other women, how they love the lush leather, and carry them with pride. It’s such a nice accessory, that brightens every outfit. For years, I’ve wanted to be part of the nice bag club, but I could never do it.
In all honesty, I’ve never been much of a bag person. I’d always forgo the big bag expenditure for shoes or dresses. I just could never bring myself to spend a lot of cash on a bag. That’s it. So lately, even my big bags are annoying me. I’d get a big bag and schlep it around the city, carrying around all this stuff, wondering how men can walk around with just their cell phone, money clip and keys.
That’s when I had my moment of truth. What do I really need to go about my day?
1. Cell phone (even though half the time I forget it, and the other half I have it turned off, or the battery is dead)
2. Camera
3. Make-up : mascara and lip gloss
4. Barrette
5. Business cards
6. Money, cards, drivers license
7. Pen
8. Oh yeah, my keys…
I could use a tiny notebook, but I usually end up losing them, or forgetting them in my other handbag.
These past two weeks, I’ve been using this grey clutch as my primary handbag. I have to say, it fits everything, even a nylon shopping bag for when I’m headed to the market. I have to say in the end, I feel so much freer than I did with a giant handbag. I found it much easier to find my keys, my cell phone, my money, and I felt safer walking around the city.
Also, this little bag, that cost less than $10 goes with almost everything I own.
Does this make me a bad fashionista?
Are there other women tired of the big bag trend?
What do you need to get through the day?

I have *always* been more of a shoe person and have happily spent 100s of dollars on a pair.
The most I’ve ever spent on a bag is maybe 40-50.
And I try to carry a minimum of things but I think most of my bags might still be a *mite* larger than your very cute one.
I keep trying to be a bag-girl too. I did buy a beautiful red sachel that I’m loving - but sometimes it does seem too big. I tend to be more of a utilitarian bag girl - something that I can carry as I bike across town. The only things I carry are my cell, wallet, keys and lip gloss. Then I find myself trying to put more stuff in the bag to fill it up!
Definitely NOT a bag girl here.
On a regular day, I have: my organizer, my wallet, keys, lip gloss, iPod, sunglasses, and cell phone (if not a few folders/books/whatever is necessary for the day).
However, my favorite days are the ones where I can carry just my credit card, ID, and keys.
I’ve never been a bag girl either- well, I do love le sportsac…and own a few, but they are definitely more utilitarian and affordable. I just got a small vintage Givenchy handbag from ebay in the mail two days ago: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3061/2299108752_7b3a8470c3_o.jpg
I have never cared about having any sort of status bag but I was slightly taken with the old lady-ness of this one and it isn’t the typical vintage Gucci…but honestly, I have no idea if this bag is authentic. The good news is that it is small, leather is navy, it has amazing compartments inside and the strap is adjustable lending the bag to situate itself over yoru head for bike rides or an extra measure of security from being snatched. I feel no need to begin a new shopping addiction to bags after this one, which is good.
I’m not much of a bag girl either! And because I’m very tactile shopper (I like to touch a lot of things) I need my hands free so I pretty much stick to messenger bags. I have quite a collection of bags that I really should start using. I just work full time and my bag is hung on the back of a door and I find myself not really caring about what it looks like because no one ever sees it anyway.
I hate carrying around a huge bag but I do it anyways as I hate gym bags even more and since I go to dance class after work I need a roomy bag to carry all my exercise clothes in. I looking forward to the day when my schedule allows me to just carry a clutch sigh….
*gasp* patti that bag is gorgeous! i found a couple of designer clutches like that on ebay… and was thinking of getting one because of the quality and the cool factor.
i’m wondering if there could be more cool small bags out there too?
Cute bag!
I love cute little bags. I carry my wallet/cell in my back pockets if I’m wearing jeans, so usually all I have in it is a notebook, gum, tissues, and a pen.
I too have never been an “it” bag person. Right now I’m using a gorgeous vintage lizard small doctor’s bag shaped bag. The purses I have tend to be vintage, from Target or a very streamlined classic shape in a great color.
I tend to use Dooney’s, mainly because they don’t add a million buckles and straps, etc. and don’t have an overly branded look to them, especially the Alto style.
My latest bag purchase was the emerald green Medium rounded satchel shown in the picture on this page - http://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10095
It’s a gorgeous color, roomy enough to carry my two phones, wallet, camera, iPod and other random stuff but it won’t be out of style ever.

I wish I could fit everything into a wee clutch! I always look like a bag lady- with a med. size purse, gym bag and a canvas tote. I bring files to and from work, walk in different shoes, etc. I need to pare it down. I’m not an IT big girl- I’m just messy and *convinced* I need to be carrying lots of stuff all the time. It’s like I’m a horse with saddlebags.
I’ve been thinking about that recently too. Its tempting to carry loads of stuff around with you…book, make-up, camera, hairbrush, umbrella, spare shoes etc. Ok sometimes you need these things but most of the time you don’t ever use them…I’ve found when I carry too much stuff with me I get a pain in my back/shoulder so it can’t be good for me. For this reason I’ve been trying to cut down to a bag about the same size as yours whenever I can. it does leave you feeling more free!
It’s funny how most of us fancy jeweled clutches, but end up toting big bags five days a week. I found out from painful experience that big bags are practical for me (err for most people for that matter). I can lug around all sorts of stuff from keys, makeup kit, books, moleskine planner, food, water, cellphones, etc. For some time, I experimented fitting work stuff into clutches only to ruin the small bag in a matter of seconds. *sigh*
I wish I could be free from the bag but alas I carry too much shit around with me…
I must say, you’ve summed up exactly how I feel in terms of bag envy.
Sure, I loved mine when I bought it (a cheapy but nonetheless pretty from the high st..) but with the amount that I insist on carrying about, it’s misshapen a little and I’m always grumbling to myself about the pain in my back.
I haven’t given up on bags though, just yet. I will be one of those people who uses a bag to polish off their outfit, I will!
everybody has their “Thing” I personally realize i am a bag person. i could buy 100s of bags if my sanity would allow me to.
and your in good company with the not caring for bag thing, Carine doesnt usu like handbags either
oh wait i forgot to add, the color of that eel clutch is perfect.
I almost never use a big bag unless im on vacation.
BTW Is that eel? Its so pretty.
I do not believe this
