“I just had this picture in mind of a woman who’s an artist,” said Cathy Pill. “She finishes painting, has an appointment to go to, and runs out as she is, with wet hair.”
I have to wonder if Jackson Pollock would have created is Action Paintings if he knew how people would take it out of context. Or maybe, that’s precisely why he did it. If any of you remember the onslaught of splatter paint on clothes in the 80’s, images of puffy paint, those t-shirt studios at the mall.. oh dear, tacky-tacky. While drippy paint is making it’s way back in fashion, part of me cringes just a little, then something happens, someone does something absolutely beautiful.

Belgian designer, Cathy Pill revealed an absolutely stunning show of couture last week in Paris. To me, these floaty dresses are more than just a woman in a rush… unlike many of the highly structured, stiff garments couture tends to conjure up, these are a bit softer, more forgiving, living. The splatter is elegant, each created by Ms. Pill herself, like the pattern of a tiger lily or an orchid, or bold like a Rorschach ink blot, walking the fine line between chance and intention.

Pretty!
oh how i love it!
out of all the fresh/out of the way designers on the scene that you’ve been featuring, this is the most fresh and original. i love it, esp. that middle dress! you said it so perfectly: “unlike many of the highly structured, stiff garments couture tends to conjure up, these are a bit softer, more forgiving, living.”
AMEN.
this woman thinks exactly the way i write poetry: how would someone doing a particular activity, in this place or age or time, react or think or feel? i imagine, then i write.
if i were to ever have my own line, that’s exactly how i would design a collection; around a woman or a man, somewhere, doing something and then, getting up to go out somewhere, exactly as they are.
can you imagine how many seasons Ms. Pill could pull off with that concept alone?
i’m in love.
These feel so genuinely, beautifully original. Really inspired.
beautiful! i love how floaty and airy they are- diaphanous without being too fairy princess.
inspiration from a gal who leaves the house with wet hair.
love it!
