Messy Hair, on purpose…

Messy Hair, on purpose…

As happy as I am to see more natural hair on the rise (thank you Mary Kate Olsen), you know hair that is not particularly straight, or curly, nor perfectly shiny and brushed. I’m even more intrigued by messy big hair, done up on purpose. Ratted hair has always been seen on runways and in fashion editorials, but Amy Winehouse and others coveting her magnificent beehive (hopefully minus the emphysema) bring back the fascination with overtly large and unnaturally sculptured hair.

The runways have been good about doing 21st century takes on th big hair movement… not quite wholesome 60′s and not punk, the mix between messy and clean creates a whole different feeling, like ripping your jeans on purpose, or paint splattered silk, the intentional mess taps into the beauty of chaos.

Besides, the thing I like about it most, is the fact that it was VERY easy to work on myself. I just ratted my hair into a lopsided beehive, hairsprayed and clipped my hair back, leaving which ever strands out. It took a few minutes (not including the straight ironing) and there was something about it I quite liked. In a way, I felt more authentic, as though I could celebrate the intentional mess inside me.

I used to be a huge fan of messy tangled matted hair (probably too much Witch Baby in me); since moving to the Mid-West, I’ve been intrigued on the way that girls tease their hair. They do it in a way that creates a very tailored, clean, fun, and deliberate look.

For the life of me, I can’t get it to work myself. My hair just falls out of the ratting. I LOVE the styling on your hair now.

marta August 4, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Haha! My hair is a mess everyday too. I wonder if other people would understand the trend.

This looks fantastic on you - but I think you have to have the “right texture” of hair to make it happen. Too fine, and I don’t think it would go so well…

Jennine, you look gorgeous! Very alluring.

Wow, you really executed that perfectly. But you didn’t tell us how you did it! What a tease! (Get it? Tease?! ;) )

My pixie cut never works itself into the perfect messy look. It starts to lean towards cute-messy right at the end of the day, but in the morning I look like Zach Morris.

If I could pull off this look, I’d be beyond happy. No more spending hours stressing over hair!

Hello Lush! those pics are lovely :) u rocking that great eye-detail simplicity.
loving the neck area in that shirt <3

That hairstyle looks cute on you! If I put nothing in my hair after I wash it, it looks like the blond Whyred model, however with my round face I look more Christmas tree

jennine August 5, 2008 at 1:24 am

punky and marta… yes, it’s wonderful to spot a trend that’s part of your natural way of being.

aw, thank you swan, i only wonder if i can do this a few days in a row…

hehe camilla.. heck even with long hair, i have zach morris hair. yo!

shenshen, why dont you give it a try?

meli thanks! it’s my stand by liquid eyeliner look, i’ve been using since high school

lucite.. i’m sure you don’t look like a christmas tree. i’m so envious of fluffy curly hair. mine is just frizz.

pass me the teasing comb and hair spray!

Marjolein August 5, 2008 at 5:01 am

It looks great on you! but I prefer shiny and smooth hair for myself haha :)

Suzanna Mars August 5, 2008 at 5:56 am

What looks chic on you would make me look deranged. I’m not done parsing what determining factors are involved, but they most certainly are not in my favor!

Is it age, face shape, hair type, hair color, mental attitude? Whatever the particulars, this is bold and appealing on you!

I’m mixed on the whole messy hair thing. It looks good on some, and terrible on others.

Looks good on you though. :-)

susie_bubble August 6, 2008 at 1:52 am

Wow…you wear the look so well! My hair just can’t stay that way….

Retro Chick August 7, 2008 at 1:56 am

I think it’s a great look.

I do this with my hair sometimes, I find it a great way to take the shine off a a dressed up look so you don’t look like you’ve made to much effort!

Cara August 7, 2008 at 6:29 am

This time last year I would never have left the house without backcombing my hair (:

Now, my haircut doesn’t seem to work with it, I need to get it cut again, I love the messy look.

me rikey!

Jeremy August 12, 2008 at 10:40 am

Oooo I love messy hair! It always makes me think someone just got finished having a one night stand and had no brush or comb. I wonder If it’ll work for a guy.
