Clash of The Tartans

by jennine on August 21, 2008

Can you even call plaid a trend? I don’t really think so… some years it’s more favorable than others, but let’s be honest here, we all have a little tartan in our wardrobe. Every now and then a few designers will come out with some exciting plaids in their collection, this year there’s Matthew Williamson, House of Holland, and Dolce&Gabbana. In lieu of the fast approaching autumn (September’s just little over a week away!) I’ve been noticing a few bits of tartan pop up on the likes of Susie Bubble and in Wardrobe Remixers like AudiSF. It’s just enough to get me coveting this classic pattern… It’s really great to see plaid mixed with other patterns like florals and polkadots, nowadays anything goes, and it’s better not to be too matchy-matchy else there’s the danger of falling into the Mr. Rogers trap (which I do quite often).

Here are some bits that I found just poking around the internet…

60′s Plaid Shift Dress $9.99 auction ends 22/08/08

Zipper Punk Tartan Slip Dress

60′s Mod Scooter Dress $24

70′s Tartan Blazer $49

50′s Pin-up Tartan Halter $39

Primark Vivienne Dress £15 auction ends 23/08/08

Now all I need to do is pull my tartans out!

I just yesterday put plaid tights on my list of Fall needs. I want, like D&G, to mix plaid tights with a plaid outfit!

Thanks psychic friend.

I’m definitely getting the mixed plaid blazer that my friend Christian Francis Roth designed!

yep I pretty much wear plaid every fall so I have a bunch already but couldn’t resist another red plaid skirt, which I wrote about yesterday. I’m totally into doing the D&G tights thing too, just deciding which color…

I’ve got to say that I choose tartan colours quite carefully…the bright reds/yellow/blues Henry Holland type tartans aren’t my bag at all…

yes, plaids are very personal… but i’m happy to see people branching out with different colors …
:)

wendy, you have so many fabulous friends!

poochie, i hope you share where the plaid tights are coming from, it’s hard to find a good pair that’s not hideously expensive.

Oooh - I wrote about this just the other day! My “Send Out For Scotch” post was all about the tartans and the rich, gorgeous “whiskey” hues coming for fall…

hehe… how lush!

I’m embarrassed to admit that I actually had NO plaid in my closet until I acquired the cape I recently posted about- depressing!

I’m considering getting a plaid trench jacket I found the other day, but then again the colours are a bit too much for me, I think I prefer the plaid skits and tights

trend de la creme August 24, 2008 at 12:47 am

it can only really be called a trend inasmuch as its pairing with other items. some would argue that there are different plaids, but in the end, plaid never really goes away :)

I’d absolutely agree. It’s something that now, especially with blogs, I laugh when I see it declared each year the new big thing for fall. It’s been present and prevalent for so long now, it almost seems like a basic.

Mytights.com had Joanathan Aston tartan tights for $13.75 and pamaela man ones in several color combos for $14.75 - even though it’s a British company, they have quite reasonable shipping in the US.
