The Lives of Others

by jennine on September 22, 2008

On the subject of home decor in the media… have you ever wondered where people put everything? Clutter is supposed to be bad for your psyche, is it? As of late I’ve been really relishing theselby.com, by photographer Todd Selby who goes into the homes of creative people and documents their native environments. I really love being witness to the real clutter… true environments…and the lovely interviews done in handwriting and felt tip pen.

While some like Alexander Wang, are very Homes and Garden worthy,  I was delighted to see Judi Rosen, the designer behind The Good, The Bad and The Ugly NYC (and to see her wearing ReMix Vintage Shoes). Her home is rather of wonderland of oddities, flea market finds and bad taxidermy. She loves the kind of stuff I know would get vetoed by my other half, but persoanlly… I’m smitten. It’s really great to see how her designs and her living environment kind of overlap in a kitchy-collaged-utlra-girly way.

Here she is wearing her Cut it Out cocktail dress, and a vintage bag with a chicken foot…

Some ephemeral items of home decor… I love these strange pictures!

She has a great place! I constantly get vetoed by my boyfriend when I try to make the house too girly for his taste, but fortunately I have a daughter and I can have fun decorating her room as I would like the whole flat to be! x

My challenge is I love stuff but hate clutter. Actually I think what I hate is dusting! So most of my stuff is “away”. For example, I have tons of neat plates and vintage serving pieces but they are all tucked away in built in cabinets. I don’t I could do the layered look as much as I like it when I see it.

It is AMAZING. Most amazing thing ever. I was so happy to have a little girl, I honestly wouldn’t know what to do with a little boy :)

I’m now a bit obsessed with the Todd Selby site. I’ve gone all New York arty-aspirational. If I don’t get some taxidermy RIGHT NOW I may implode somewhat.

And if my opinion, clutter rules. It has to, in my house.

Becky.

I love that dress. At any rate, what perfect decor! I just moved, and have been wondering how to decorate my new place. This gives me great ideas! Thanks!

Jennine

I’ll have to do a photoshoot of all my serving pieces and teapots and stuff.

I have fun pulling out a random piece and and asking the hubby “what do you think this is?” He’s like “I have no idea.”

“It’s a baked pototo fork!”

Then he gives me this look like I’m crazy.

; )

these are great! I love seeing how creative the smallest places could be ( i’ve seen the super petite creations from apt. therapy) and makes me always re-arrange and do crazy cool stuff. Great post <3

Oooh, I love this home. I’m especially smitten with her tiny little floral couch.

Her home reminds me a little bit of Amy Sedaris, who had equally random collections of neat, colorful, cool things-or, at least she did when Bust had her ont he cover.

It’s refreshing to see places like this. Those decor magazines are so polished and boring. A little clutter and personality is certainly “a good thing”!
