From Nana’s Kitchen

by Sonja on December 4, 2008

I just discovered Nana Essence, a really nice line of natural products with a great story behind it. I spoke with the creator Nana Korolev recently to learn more about Nana Essence.

How It Began

Nana used to be a competitive swimmer so her hair became very dry and brittle, damaged from the chemicals in pools. They were also causing her to lose her hair. She didn’t have many products available where she lived and wanted something natural so she collected local folk recipes and experimented to create something to help her hair. Later when she had her second child, she started losing her hair again so she went back to her recipes. She created a liquid (what is now her Hair Mask) that made her hair fuller, softer, shinier, and healthier and shared it with friends. They loved it so much that they asked her to make a shampoo and conditioner. Then they asked for shower gels. The demand became so great that she started her own line, which launched in 2004.

Her Line

Her Canadian-based line is certified organic and biodegradable with no chemical preservatives, alcohol, or synthetic fragrances, never tested on animals, and come in containers that can be recycled. She found extracts of organic nettle, white oak, and birch to be highly effective in helping damaged hair. She has expanded her line beyond haircare products, because fans keep asking her to make more products. Her line now includes the hair mask, shampoo, conditioner, two body washes, and a spray deodorant. Everything is reasonably priced. Every product is $12.99.

Sophie Uliano, author of the great book Gorgeously Green, is a big fan of Nana’s shampoo and says that it’s excellent for dry hair and meets all the green requirements.

My Experience

I’ve tried Nana Essence products and found that the hair mask, shampoo, and conditioner added volume and shine. You only need to use very little. Nana recommends using just a teaspoon of the shampoo and conditioner, and only washing once. The shower gels are thick and wonderfully fragrant from organically grown rosemary and spearmint.

If your hair is damaged and/or thinning, her products could be just what you’re looking for. They’re available at health food stores all over Canada and on her website.

Fascinating. I’m Canadian (living in Toronto) and I shop at health food stores all the time. I’ve never seen this line in any of them. I wonder if I’ll start noticing it now.

❤ Hi K-Line. She’s been going to tons of stores so you should start seeing her line more. Here’s a list of stores where her products are sold now:

❤ Imelda, Nana’s line is not in Australia yet. But she says that she does ship internationally from her site. Hope that helps. :)

I heard back from Nana and it’s $54 to have the shampoo and conditioner shipped to Aus. I won’t be braking open my bullion stash, so I’ll look around.

❤ Sorry to hear that, Imelda. Eek.
