Garden of Shadows

by jennine on May 22, 2009

Summer has arrived. I know this because I’m wearing a dress with no tights. Sure, Memorial Day is this weekend, but I’m not in America, so I have to use other cues like the sun, and this summer, I’m avoiding the sun, and opting for the cool shadows of the garden… leathery bronzed skin, well,  so 20th century. (ok, I like the occasional warm-up but no marathon sessions on the beach!)

As normal, my inspiration is all over the place… today, I’m feeling more of a 1930’s homestead vibe in my Minnie Wilde (now Ellie Olson) dress and lately, I’ve discovered how handy braids are in keeping my hair in order, you can’t tell here because I’ve tucked the braids into my headband to avoid looking to Pipi Longstocking-ish, but I’ve been wearing braids for about two weeks straight.

Speaking of my year-old dress….I really want new clothes. This past year has been tough in the shopping department, but I guess the homesteaders didn’t complain about not having a new dress every week like they ‘used to-back in the day’. Admittedly I like making the most out of what I have, remembering when I was shopping all the time, I never seemed to have the right thing, and it was never enough. Having something new and shiny is great, I love it, but style should be something more than new and shiny. Of course, I’ll always want more, I always do.

On another note…Do you like how Fynn, the dog, just loves to make his way in all the shots? Such a helpful dog! Or a total ham… depends on how you look at it…

Such beautiful pictures! It really does look like summer, I’m not convinced it’s really arrived here yet though, despite my lack of tights!

Lovely, lovely! And your hair looks really great!
A note on “always shopping” or “making the most of what is already in the wardrobe”: I made the same experience with shopping all the time: always sth. new but never quite right. I felt more exhausted than content. Really not easy to find a good balance!

❤ retrochick hahah england is funny that way!
❤ friederike hahah, oh when you find a balance just let me know… i’m beginning to wonder if finding contentment is one of those life long quests… fashion or otherwise!

I still wear tights even in the summer, though I occasionally try to go without…

Fynn is a very helpful boy! Maybe he wants to be the first puppy blogger… he does make a great accessory though…

These photographs are so pretty :) I love your shoes, and your hair looks fantastic!! I hope it stays sunny this Bank Holiday weekend, the weather has been far too damp for my liking.

“the homesteaders didn’t complain about not having a new dress every week ” — well, they died at about 30 years old so they didn’t need as much variety.

❤ ashe… hehe, i think there are probably a whole host of puppy bloggers! he’s just being helpful…
❤ dapper, you and me both.. so far we’ve had sun, storm, thunder, hail, and now it’s sun agian. wtf?
❤ wendy… haha well at least if they died before 30, they didn’t have to worry about puffy eyes or wrinkles. (my main cause of worry these days)
❤ apricot.. aahhh he loves you too.

Cute dress. I love the pioneer vibe. My favourite photo is the one with your and the dog’s feet tpgether. Adorable! I haven’t been able to shop much lately as I just graduated from university (which kept me broke) and I haven’t found a job yet thanks to the recession. So I’m certainly learning how to make do (with the exception of the odd gift my mom buys me when we go shopping.)

Cammila May 22, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Beautiful dress, beautiful girl, beautiful sentiment, and beautiful dog. On the serious: that pup looks like a professional dog-model who was cast specifically for this shoot. That dog doesn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. (Paid in…Oh, I don’t know, chew toys or something.) ;)

Oh- I want to rock those prairie braids! I completely agree with you about wanting more more more. I’ve been trying to be very good shoppingwise, but not being very successful at it. Sigh.

Hehe that’s my barometer for whether summer is here or not too, and judging from the fact that I’m also wearing a dress sans tights today I’d say it’s here!

Love the shot of your shoes with the dog’s paws-so darling.
