Coveted Fashion Digest : Fabulous Nobodies

by jennine on June 16, 2009

This week’s fashion digest delves into fashion insanity, WalMart jeans, crocodile dinners and creepy photographers… oh… the photo above, I just put it in because I love balloons worn like regular clothing. Photo via Chinese Vogue & Foto Decadent.

Hermes loves crocs … they love them so much they bought the farm. Ok so I borrowed the tag from Ihatecrocs.com. Anyway, to keep up with demand for their $48,000 handbags, Hermes has started breeding their own crocodiles, mostly in Australia to make their legendary Birkin bags. Yep… and just so you know, it takes about three to four crocs to make one of those things. They also have to raise the crocs them in separate rooms to prevent them from biting each other. The whole thing just gives me the heebie jeebies… not that I have anything against leather, I mean, I eat meat. But I guess it wasn’t until now that I found out people EAT crocodiles… and the meat is actually low in fat and high in protein. Yeah, thought I’d share that with you. *shudder*

British Vogue says ‘No more size zeros’… Omg, I just about laughed out loud. Editor Alexandra Shulman leaked a strongly worded letter complaining that the new “sample sizes don’t comfortably fit the established star models.” Yet, the whole heroine chic developed during her reign at British Vogue. I don’t know… the whole thing seems to be a farce… the fashion industry seems to be caught up in some kind of Butter Battle Book conflict when it comes to putting healthy looking women in clothes (I’ll do it when ‘they’ do it). In unrelated stands against current fashion trends…personally, I’d like to see someone in fashion take a stand against smoking. That shit is disgusting.

We don’t have to keep it a secret anymore… Cathryn Horn comes out of the closet with her WalMart jeans… oh wait, that’s just like the rest of us.

Fabulous Nobodies … from a book I haven’t read, but love the title… to a movie in the works… it’s about a quirky woman named Reality Nirvana Tuttle who names her frocks and sports a Chanel tattoo (not bad for a character created in the 80’s).

Picture Me Trailer

Picture Me: The darker side of fashion…. a new documentary made by model Sara Ziff has given us a glimpse into the very secretive world of modeling, that with all the money and attention, maybe it’s not the kind of attention a person would really want…

Halfway through the meeting [Sena] Cech is asked to strip. She does as instructed and takes off her clothes. Then the photographer starts undressing as well. “Baby - can you do something a little sexy,” he tells her. The photographer’s assistant, who is watching, eggs her on. What’s supposed to be the casting for a high-end fashion shoot turns into something more like an audition for a top-shelf magazine. It gets really creepy from here… read the story Via The Guardian

Yikes. Visit Picture Me’s myspace page for more clips.

Speaking of creepy photography… Tongue and cheek American Apparel spoof. Who says sharpies aren’t sexy?

Hermes bought a croc farm? The fact that 1 handbag is made from 3 crocodiles is a bit freaky!
I never liked or ever wanted a Birkin and don’t think I ever will!

Also I watched the American Apparel spoof, it was weirdly funny… dental floss is sexy! hahah

You’re so right about the Butter Battle. Everyone’s talking big, but no one’s acting. Not in any lasting, meaningful way. Bleh.

Cathy Horyn wears Walmart jeans? Stop the presses! LOL. The texture of Crocodile has always creeped me out in general. I’d rather carry a faux-stamped Croc. The bumps of Ostrich also creep me out, too, speaking of “exotics.” In any event, I’d never be able to afford one of them exotic Hermes bags, so I just saved at least 3 crocs.

This post is awesome! It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the fashion world - taking it so seriously and thinking about what the “next thing” will be. The croc farm really will make me stop and think the next time I want to drool over a Birkin bag. And Picture Me looks really interesting- the modeling world reminds me of the cut-throat world of ballet- heebie jeebies abound.
