Love and Roses

Once you get hooked on scarves it’s hard to break out of it. Scarves are like jugular crack. Addictive. Growing up in Southern California, I never, ever, ever wore a scarf. It never even occurred to me. When I moved to a less temperate climate… San Francisco, I saw people wearing scarves, but I couldn’t figure it out. Then someone (from New England) introduced me to scarves. Really, it was like that. I liked them on other people and in pictures, but until I had a scarf of my own, I had no idea how comforting it was to have one of the most vulnerable parts of my body protected by soft layers of wool. Then my love for scarves was born.

Yeah, I hear scarves are trendy… but are they? I’ve been wearing them pretty much for the last 12 years. Almost all year round. Now they’ve become a sercurity measure as well as a warmth thing. They’re like my security blanket. Which is why I love seeing different kinds of scarves. Not just your regular square ones… I love scarf tubes, neckcuffs, and ruffs. A few years ago I went on about Sandra Suy’s illustrations of her elaborate neck ornaments. In unrelated yet similarly inspired events, these rose scarves from Alice & Isa have come into my scope of vision. Beautiful felted wool and silk that wraps around your neck in the form of a giant ruffle looking like a petal. You can pretend you’re Thumbelina, or an Elizabethan lady. The concept is simple, yet dramatic and poetic.

Do you wear scarves all year round?

  8. You know that I love these scarves…. and like you, I tend to wear scarves year round. It’s probably the combo of bouncing from swamp land to artic tundra (or so they feel), but I can’t imagine not wearing them regularly!

  9. Great article! And yes indeed, I love scarves. So much so that I’ve just bought 24 vintage scarves which will soon be for sale on my website. Wearing a scarf has got to be the cheapest way of brightening up your wardrobe and adds a bit of glamour at the same time. Think Audrey Hepburn and Bridgette Bardot!

  10. I wear them all year round. In the winter, I actually sleep with a cashmere scarf around my neck. Sometimes, it’s the same one I’ve been wearing all day (because it’s too cold to divest myself of it). By the end of the winter, that scarf is so gross! I have silk scarves for the other 3 seasons - all shapes and sizes. And pashminas. They are a perfect contingency.

  14. Stunning!!! I too am a scarfaholic. Sometimes even in the summer. Perhaps I could rationalize the cost knowing that my first reaction was I would be maybe married and definitely buried in it someday. lol

To me, that is the kind of statement piece that would never go out of style.

Where can I find more colors? Did someone say Etsy? I’m going to go poke around. Thanks for the post! :)

  16. I do wear scarves year-round, and LOVE them. I had an acupuncturist tell me to always keep my neck covered, and it really does help me feel warm and secure … not to mention stylish!

  18. I love these scarves! The colors are especially nice. I wear summer scarves occasionally, but it’s usually too humid where I am, unfortunately…

  21. Jennine,

I too am from Southern Cal and I moved up here to San Francisco 5 years ago. So, for these last 5 years scarves have certainly been a part of my wardrobe year round. My favorite thing is that you can always find gorgeous scarves while traveling in other countries, so every one of my scarves has a story behind it. Thanks for the post!
