Modern Classics

Personally, I’m so excited to see Madmen staring up again. Aside from the great stories, the show acts as a beautiful reminder of what I love about vintage dresses… their ‘occasional’ feeling. The idea that we should dress for every occasion. Ok, that’s a TV show, but my grandmother, would attest that it’s how she lived her middle class life. Maybe it runs in the family. Anyway, as much as I like vintage dresses, sometimes I want the modern equivalent, sexy, well presented, yet with immaculate details. Montreal based designer Valerie Dumaine perfectly quenches these cravings, with mid century era silhouettes with shorter hemlines, and contemporary elements. Her new fall collection is available now, and with price points in the $125-$150(US) range, you get both unique dresses with a vintage modern twist.

  • Ines Wool Blend tulip skirt $145 (CAD)
  • Jean Pencil Dress $175 (CAD) reminds me of Ashe’s Joan Holloway dress
  • Cairo tulip dress with open back $175 (CAD)

Oh my goodness… these are so stunning and drool worthy. I don’t know which I love more…

Ms. Dumaine really knows how to update those vintage pieces to make them much more modern and still so timeless!

Wow, the word that comes to mind is lush. Just impeccable in every way — the prints, the tailoring, the fabrics. Just the feeling I always get from vintage pieces — which explains a few things.

The navy dress is so wearable! And the pricepoint isn’t out of the ballpark for quality peices either. Nice finds.

What great dresses! I understand the want for the modern equivalent of 50s/60s era styles, I crave that ‘newness’ as much as I do good vintage. That pencil dress is amazing, especially for the price!

I love it! Classic pieces that are good for any occasion and you don’t have to go for broke for them, either.
