Traveling for the Holidays

murakami chair

Starting next week, I’ll be traveling until the first week of January! I’ll be blogging the whole time and working, but we have some exciting news to share!

Seoul Searching

First off, we will be going to Seoul, Korea. Rocky won the Designboom Green Life Award, and we will be going to Korea to attend the award ceremony. The award winning designs are the Murakami Chair, which uses energy generated from the rocking motion to power a reading light using OLED nano-dynamo technology. He also designed a thermodynamic cooler that keeps your food at a reduced temperature using no electricity. Rocky put these together for his Master Thesis, and I’m really happy that he won this, because he really worked hard on these projects.

We’ll be in Korea for about a week, from November 30-December 1st. I don’t know much about fashion and shopping in Seoul, except that it’s on the upswing. So if you’re in Korea, or if you have any special tips, I would LOVE them!

Home is where the heart is, and hearts are left in San Francisco

I haven’t been back to SF since we moved, and I dearly miss it, well, mostly friends, family, food and Painted Bird. We have some business to attend to, but I’ll be sticking around from December 10-21st, so if you’re around, let me know!

Christmas in Sunny Southern California

As many of you know, I am from SoCal, and my family still lives there. I’ll be going to my mom’s house, mostly to eat tortilla chips otter-style with the bowl on my belly (less crumbs!) and watch trashy cable TV on their giant screen. I’d like to do a day trip to San Diego or LA, so if you’re in town over the holidays I’ll be there from December 22nd-29th. Any shopping tips are appreciated!

Holy moly, looking at this, it just looks really crazy.

WOW! That chair is brilliant! Congratulations to your man, that is really exciting. :) Enjoy your trip!

Re: San Francisco, have you been to Ramblas? It’s a tapas restaurant in the Mission that we randomly discovered the other night after a concert at the Elbo Room. OMIGOsh, the basil vodka lemonade is incredible & each tapas we ordered was better than the next. The cheese plate was tdf.

Re: LA, I can only say ugh. I’m from the South Bay & I rarely visit. When I do though, I always like to visit Melrose Ave. The stores there have changed a lot. While I loved the punk rock vibe back in the day, it’s pretty chic now. Also, there’s nothing better than roller skating from Torrance Beach to Venice Beach.

OH MY FREAKING GOD. My family is from Korea- I spent part of my youth there. I’ll pull up a good list for you as some friends were at Seoul Fashion Week. I also grew up in LA. :) I’ll be in LA for Christmas break, too! I would love to say hi if our schedules overlap.

Check out Insadong- not the best place for trendy clothing, but definitely a beautiful spot (it’s the traditional area of Seoul), and a great place to pick up some souvenirs. Also look for the Starbucks- it has a lovely exterior. Have a wonderful trip!

Jennine! These are SUCH exciting trips! I’m so jealous of you, for one, and how much fun you’re going to have. I can’t wait to see pictures from your travels.

And a big fat congratulations to Rocky! That is a brilliant design, and I’m glad to see his hard work paid off.

Seoul — so envious! I was there earlier this year and the trip was far too short. The food is amazing! And there’s a big café culture there too. Always a great way to unwind for a bit.

Congrats on the trip and on Rocky, Jeannine!

Please do post more tips on good clothing stores in SF please! I remember you did that before you moved away, but I’m always hungry for more, since I moved to SF from Europe when you did the opposite.

Have fun traveling!

Ooooh congratulations to Rocky!! I’m in Korea right now (until June). You should take some time to check out Dongdaemun - it’s a huge shopping complex in the middle of Seoul. It’s a little bit crazy, and you should take an entire afternoon to browse. And don’t forget Insadong, as Audrey mentioned before. It’s a little bit touristy (cheesy souvenir shops and the like), but you can also try traditional Korean rice cakes and snacks in the tea shops.

There are a bunch of other places I can’t think of off the top of my head… will get back to you once I remember them.

And don’t forget to try kimchi! :)

Oh wow! That is brilliant for Rocky, congratulations to him! The chair looks amazing and the cooler just sounds fantastic. I spend a lot of time in hotels and have occasionally been known to take one of those tiny portable fridges with me, that would be a great alternative.

I hope you have a great trip all round. Unfortunately all I know about Korea comes from M*A*S*H so I would recommend Rosies Bar, but it’s possible that doesn’t exist….
