Plaid for Rainy Days

by jennine on November 30, 2009

When it’s raining out, I generally like to hide inside drinking tea and watching trashy TV. But that’s not possible every day… well it’s possible, but I wouldn’t be a very productive person.

If it’s not too cold, or raining too hard, it’s actually possible to wear outfits that don’t look like they came straight out of the LL Bean catalog. Luckily, it hasn’t gotten so cold here in Chicago. Either that, or I’m acclimating…that, and I wear a coat over this anyway. But when it comes to rain, I have this theory about jeans vs. tights. Jeans might protect from the cold better, but once they’re wet, they’re wet. Whereas tights, they get wet, but then dry in 5 minutes. So wearing dresses or in this case, shorts in the rain, not such a bad idea. In my head anyway.

Here I’m wearing a plaid blazer I got at the Francis SS10 blogger studio visit, I bought it back then, but haven’t worn it for some strange reason. Here I’m wearing it with my trusty argyle tights, cut off jeans Spun tank, and a pair of mustard knee highs I picked up at Target yesterday. Hats are also essential for rainy days, because my hair tends to get in a terrible state at the sign of any weather.

Blazer : Francis • Tank : Spun • Socks and Hat : Target • Tights : Charlotte Russe • Shorts : Wrangler via flea market

Love how you’ve mixed all the plaid and plaid-like elements together! And sorry again for bailing this weekend - thanks for understanding, and we’ll hang out soon, I swear.

The jacket is lovely. And the way you’ve paired it with the floral umbrella brings out the excellence in both items all the more…

I love this whole idea. You are so right about the jeans on a rainy day. I always make that mistake & it’s the worst. I just scored the cutest ribbed, knitted leggings from Marshall’s for like $12! They’re going to be perfect with boots when it rains. :) I love plaid, but I always feel like a lumberjack in it. Woof. Of course, you look fabulous as usual. Enjoy your day!

Oh, I almost forgot- I’m not sure if I saw these boots on your blog or somewhere else, but they are 30% off right now at endless, so I thought I’d mention it. I got a pair last night. Oops! ;)

I am absolutely with you on the tights and rain thing, I’ve had similar conversations about bare legs in the rain (especially during summer when it’s not cold) If my legs get wet I can dry them with a paper towel, trousers will be wet and soggy all day!

I do love that blazer and it looks so cute with the floral umbrella.

I absolutely love plaid. Not so sure about the cut off shorts for me in the winter. But some girls can get away with wearing anything. Thanks for the ideas! :)

and you’re totally right about jeans in the rain. shoes are really important too. there’s nothing worse than wet, cold feet!
