Andrea Crews Creates Fashion Live

by jennine on January 13, 2010

People like to say ‘Fashion is Art.’ Do you agree with that? Sometimes fashion really is art, fashion houses like the ol’ Hussein Chalayan, Maison Martin Margiela and Comme Des Garçons often produce extravagantly whimsical pieces that transform our perception of fashion sometimes even our relationship to getting dressed every  morning. For every high caliber design house, there are thousands of it’s lesser known counterparts, some deservedly so, and some, well… are truly artists who deserve more recognition! One of my favorites, artist collective Andrea Crews led by Maroussia Rebecq that’s continually pushed the envelope with rethinking clothing initially reconstructing vintage clothing to creating videos, performance art, happenings, and engaged in fashion/art/activism.

This season, in February the collective will create their entire collection in front of an audience, recycling overstock from brands produced in France.,’Invited as an artist in residence for the festival Hors Pistes at the Pompidou Center.  Andrea Crews will create a unique collection through an ephemeral workshop designed specifically for the recreation of recycled clothing….Andrea Crews will recycle the stocks of certain brands, Made in France in order to create an exclusive collection that epitomizes contemporary values: sustainable development and creative spontaneity.’

At the end of the week long event, they’ll present the collection at the Hors Pistes space, then again at Paris Fashion Week.

Here’s some pictures of the collective’s previous work:

I love her stuff and creativity, I knew about her 4 years ago and I’m still amazed at the wonderful pieces her group of artists and collaborators make, who says great avant-garde has to have a label on it ;)

Much love,
Glendy

I absolutely believe that fashion is art. I wish life were less about being practical so we could all take more risks and live more often in costumes for each day.
