The Coveted On Fashion Blogs Video

by jennine on January 21, 2010

On Fashionblogs from Mary Scherpe on Vimeo.

What a crazy year so far, three weeks in! Mary Scherpe, from Stil in Berlin and Pudri had gotten in touch with me to ask if I could participate in a blogger video which would be shown during Berlin Fashion Week at the Panel at Premium Exhibitions with Imran Amed (Business of Fashion), Christoph Amend (Zeit Magazin), Marcus Luft (Gala, Too Posh to Push) and Sven Schoene (K-MB).

In this video she asks Suzy Menkes (IHT), Yvan Rodic (Facehunter),  Julia Knolle and Jessi Weiss (LesMads) and little ol’ me to share our opinion on blogging. Looking back at this, I probably would have tried to smarten up my answers as everyone else had very interesting things to say! Well then again, I usually like to break down things into small words and visual aids in my head…which is probably why it comes out my mouth that way.

Have a look at the video, I was particularly interested in what Suzy Menkes had to say about blogger independence and the influence of corporate seeding. That while bloggers feel that they are completely independent, many of us are increasingly fed stories by companies who want to reach our audience. I’ve thought this myself as the number of story ‘ideas’ in my inbox grows and how they have gotten increasingly aggressive about getting coverage. One publicist  invited me to an event, and when I couldn’t go she offered to write a guest post about it. Then there are all the times I’ve been tipped off on stories and been happy to write about it. I’m not really sure how that is different from traditional media, as I’ve never worked in the traditional media…but it’s certainly food for thought.

Really interesting a great video. I know what you mean, I sometimes wonder how much I write is actually my own ideas!

Maile John January 21, 2010 at 3:16 pm

This video was really amazing! Suzy Menkes describes it so clearly when she speaks about how bloggers have transformed fashion from a monologue to conversation. It really shows how profound blogging is in creating the voice of real style for real people. I really enjoyed it that you did this video short. Bravo!

jennine January 21, 2010 at 7:46 pm

yes…that’s my favorite part.. i wasn’t even interested in fashion until the conversation opened up…

I thought you sounded and looked great. :)

I keep getting press releases from some company I’ve never heard of, and they’re pitching everything under the sun. Case in point: this week, I got one on “Fitness Myths”! I’d never, ever post anything on “fitness,” even though I’m a fitness instructor, simply because posting that kind of information is dangerous. One never knows how a reader is going to interpret that material, or what they’ll do with it. There’s too much liability. Why would a P.R. company I’m not acquainted with send me such stuff?

I won’t even mention the fact that I reach 1.67325 people, so any P.R. company banking on me to reach people would be pushing the outer limits. ;)

jennine January 21, 2010 at 7:47 pm

omg i got the same one! like i dont even talk about my ‘fitness routine’ hahaha

Veronica January 21, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I am so glad you like it! I think it turned out really well and Suzy is such an inspirational person to talk to. She is so smart, informed, refined and still so open to new things and influences - it is amazing! She never stops reflecting herself and the world around her - she is such a role model in terms of intellectual fashion reporting.

I enjoyed doing this video very much and I have to thank Premium, that they gave me the opportunity to! This is where it comes to the question of Veronica - the video was made by a professional editor - he edited with final cut pro, which is the top end product for editing.

wow, it’s really great you made that connection because I don’t know many bloggers who have really pulled it off connecting with the traditional media and making people like suzy menkes accessible to the bloggosphere. it’s totally changed the way i think of her.

you do fantastic work mary!

Uau! Suzy really knows what she talks about, and all of you too, of course. I dind’t feel that you felt less smart than the others! ;) Now regarding the PR companies, they’re so stubborn in Spain too.. they block my email everyday, and don’t understand what “NO, THANKS” measn!

Good job you did there. Regards from Barcelona!

though i realized i could say this for now… interactivity, absolutely. i can’t even stand when i can’t interact now. and eventually feel odd or at least disinterested if whoever/whatever i am talking to doesn’t say something back. it’s funny i think because it is so much a part of human nature but we got so used to not interacting like that when it came to media.

ok, now to get that computer…

jennine January 22, 2010 at 4:35 pm

oh yeah, interactivity has really changed the game. it’s not enough that it’s cool, it has to become part of our experience. we’re no longer the voyeurs, well not for much longer.

xtina January 22, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Thanks for posting the clip! It was really interesting. I definitely agree with what the fashion editor had to say. Media is such a big thing and fashion blogs are being created like crazy. Some stay, some don’t. And you looked great!

Wow what a great video. Some interesting thoughts on this, especially like you said, the whole seeding business. It’s so true with the amount of campaigns and information that hits my inbox on a daily basis. Something that I have been grappling with lately is the fine line between accepting too many freebies, because if you’re not careful it will compromise the overall theme of your blog. Really interesting topic. Plus, I’m planning on doing my dissertation at university on new social media and fashion so this has been invaluable to add to my research! Thanks!

By the way, you looked amazing in the video!

Margaret January 23, 2010 at 3:15 pm

This is such a great video - and I think you look and sound fantastic! I agree with things getting out of hand. I was recently offered tickets to an event - when I accepted I was told I would need to write about it first. I declined. That’s not a pitch, its a bribe. - margaret

yay jennine! i love suzy menkes and her commentary in this video is quite apt and intelligent. there’s currently a lot of hype in the fashion blogosphere, especially since it’s all blown up quite a lot since 2006-2007 when Scott Schuman started blogging. but your blog is always such a lovely place for me to sip my morning coffee and catch up on the day’s posts! :)

Great job Jennine! And you got your point across just fine, don’t worry that you “should have” thought things out more. As far as your question regarding traditional media — I don’t see much difference, PR companies are always pitching. With blogging, I’ve noticed a change in the way they’re pitching. Previously they pitched in a way that led you to believe they hadn’t even looked at your blog. Now they are picking out something from one post and commenting in the email pitch (usually your latest post) even though what they are pitching is completely unsuitable for inclusion on the blog. My guess is that bloggers complained about them not bothering to read before pitching, so now they think if they include a tidbit about your blog that you’ll fall for their pitch. Ah psychology in the PR world, LOL!
Cheers!

What’s frustrating with ‘seeding’ is when PR/Brand Managers feed you a story that has no news content - content that would otherwise be considered advatorial by traditional press! But Yvan is right, 2010 is a great year to be a fashion blogger!

This is truly an amazing video; and I could not agree more with your thoughts. Some companies become too aggressive - almost like bullies demanding certain things. As fashion bloggers, I believe it is our duty to create ideas of our own; and, if inspired by a bit of news that comes our way, work with it. Our blogs are our own - no one should dictate what we feature on them. Also, when you begin seeing everyone feature the very same product at the exact same time it’s as if you lose your personal blogging voice. :)
