Dressed for the Evolving Influence Conference

by jennine on February 19, 2010

vintage dress

It happened again, with all the good intentions of hosting an event and looking great for it, I end up showing up in a dress I only spent one hour looking for. It happened the first Dress Up event, where I showed up in a blue sequin dress that I picked up in a frenzy, the next time, I left it to the last day… and this time with only one day to go before the big show, I end up heading out to a vintage boutique on the  Upper West side called Allan & Suzy. Searching frantically through all the dresses, looking for something that’s ‘not black’  boutique owner Allan picks up this dress and on the rack it looks ridiculously ugly. I almost said no, but figured what the heck, might as well give it a try. Made of silk chiffon, and wow, with this wasp-waist silhouette, this dress has got to be the most perfectly fitted dress I’ve ever worn in my life. I haven’t had a chance to see what was on the runways yet, but to tell the truth, I miss the well-fit dress.

Wendy Brandes lent me the Cleopatra necklace for the big day, I’ve never worn such a gorgeous necklace, it, like the rest of her collection is tactile smooth and has this almost edible quality. One of these days I’ll be able to afford it..

I should be coming out with the recap of the Evolving Influence Conference soon, we’re just waiting on a few more things to show you, so I’ll hold off on that until we can get it all right. Until then… I’ll just give you a sneak peak of what I wore.

Photo by the fantastic Dustin Fenstermacher, who’s been our event photographer all three IFB events…he’s so great.

Dress: Allan & Suzy Vintage • Necklace : Wendy Brandes • Shoes : Jessica Simpson

I noticed the dress and the necklace while I was watching the live stream and wow it looks even better than I could see on the screen. The shoes are fab too. I’m off to LFW shortly and I’m going to wear colour, I’m fed up with fashionista black. well done on a super event which the live stream brought to my living room.

I saw some photos of you in my Google Readahhh, and I was so, so smitten with your outfit! You look great- it seems like a bit of a detour from your usual wearings, but I think that’s what makes it so spectacular. You look amazing, it fits perfectly… and HOLY SHIT those shoes! It never dawned on me how big they were until they’re on your feet… were they insane to walk in?!

Oh I love this! It’s so retro.
I agree, I miss the days of the well-fitted dress. All of the edgy, baggy dresses that are shown these days just look awful on me, I need something that accentuates the waist. Shame…

Tamia February 20, 2010 at 9:38 am

I’m convinced that the more matronly something looks on the hanger, the better it looks on the body. This is likely a ploy conceived by clothing designers/retailers to ensure that only the most adventurous fashionistas get the best stuff, so kudos for seeing through their ruse!

Ann of Holier Than Now provided great coverage of the conference for StyleSampleMag.com, and after seeing her photos I’m extra jealous that I wasn’t able to attend. Thank you for putting together what was obviously an amazing event!

So jealous you got to attend. I had to be stuck in good o’ Seattle that weekend… but living vicariously through everyone who attended. Good posts :)

SarahJayne @ Goldmine Trash February 20, 2010 at 7:29 pm

That dress looked amazing on live stream, lemme tell ya! And I’m not just being biased because 50s dresses are one of my specialties. I really did think it was something. I kept wondering wether it was real vintage, or just a great dress in a 50s style. With the way you styled it, it looked very up to date and not like a costume at all.

So many dresses that look frumpy on the rack end up AMAZING on! But it’s so hard to convince people of that. Kudos to you for taking the chance.

Gorgeous! That is the kind of dress that as a little girl, dreaming of being grown up, imagines themselves in. Or at least i did… love how it is floaty and soft against the gritty street backdrop.
