Anniversaries and Annie Halle

Anniversaries and birthdays… they always make you look at the last year, the last few years… your life, you name it…

Today is my 35th  birthday, I know because my husband woke me up with enough candles to set the crumble cake on fire. The Coveted also turned 3 last week. Strangely, last year, I also combined the birthday post and The Coveted anniversary, perhaps because we’re too close, due to the usual, pre-birthday freak out…that, and I don’t want to be, “Horray! Look at my blog, one year older!” Then, a week later, “Look at me… one year older.”

We’re both older, and we’re also back where we started… San Francisco. For those of you following me on Twitter…you already know, Rocky and I packed up and headed out of the Windy City and straight back to the Fog City after a two year absence.  Being back is strange, it feels like when you return home after being on vacation for a real long time and the house smells different. We even moved into our new place exactly one block up and one block over from where I used to live back when The Coveted is born, even closer to Huntington Square where I used to take all my outfit pics. It’s nice to be home. It’s nice to see my old friends again, and it’s nice to wear a coat without actually ‘needing to wear a coat.’

I know it’s typical to wear a more festive dress on your birthday, but I’ve had this outfit in my mind for some time, I’ve put it on, and taken it off several times, feeling it wasn’t femme enough, and not dapper enough to quantify the ‘Annie Hall’ look. It’s a basic button up denim shirt with a pair of wool high waisted trousers, with a pea coat…quite preppy actually…and actually very comfortable. I’ve forgotten how much a relaxed trouser and a tucked in button up can be sharp and yet still effortless and comfortable. Heck, I used to wear this kind of thing all the time, but somehow, with all the dresses, and chunky sweaters, this classic aesthetic has been lost.  But it’s good to be back to the basics, for today at least.
