Old Hat, New Tricks

by jennine on April 14, 2010

The real reason why I was passing by the Marc Jacobs store the other day, was because I was on my way to Britex Fabrics. The magical fabric store, where you believe anything is possible if you know how to sew (which I don’t…but a girl can dream cant she?) So fabric nerdiness aside, I had a vintage straw hat picked up at the Alameda Flea Market that needed some TLC. It’s been crushed, which didn’t bother me so much as the crumpled and slightly dirty, yellow satin ribbon.  I love yellow, but this just wasn’t working for me. So at Britex, I agonized over the millions of ribbons they had, an finally settled on this pretty, hand-died silk ribbon.

I’m not sure what intrigued me most about this, the watery tones, the blue and green swirling together, the lightness of the silk. If I could have a whole dress made of this…oh man. Instead of going with a more vintage style ribbon, a solid classic, stripped or flower, this modernizes the hat, and with ribbons, you can always put something more ‘authentic’ later as you’ll just need tiny pieces of thread to secure the ribbon to the hat.

For the bow, one could look up bow techniques on the internet, but I just figured something out by ripping apart old gift bows. This one is quite simple actually as there is no knot involved… it’s called a tailored loop bow.

And wella! My new hat! Now I just have to figure out what to do with my hair to make this into a proper outfit!

Oh gorgeous gorgeous green color ribbon, I love you so!
And you make such a pretty bow!
That little old hat was feeling so mad and yellow,
You came to him and now he is so cute and mellow.

Love love love!

Had just returned from my work-out when I read your post. Exercise does weird things to a person. I am feeling rather poetic today. :D

cute! Tailored bows are my very favorite, so much so that I made 500 of them for my wedding favors last year …

As far as hats go, I LOVE them but have been blessed with a huge head, the only hats I can seem to manage are the stretchy kind.

But that one is super cute. Looks fab on you!

Lovely!!!

I know it’s totally different, but I want a wide brimmed hat for the summer. One of those typical huge straw ones. Especially now that I’ve gotten myself a vintage swim suit off ebay, ahaha.

It turned out so well! Your project just reminded me that I’ve been wanting to actually make something with my hands-I do creative stuff using a computer all the time, but I can’t remember the last time I picked up glue/fabric/paint/a pair of scissors/whatever and created something tangible.

How darling! I really love taking something old and kind of worn, and updating it a bit with some new component! I just adore the hat shape as well; such a cute piece that can really work well into a wardrobe. Not too over the top, but still unique. Can’t wait to see what outfit you accessorize this with!

I am so rubbish at bows. Your creativity is fantastic - I only wish I had half of it and also a head that fits hats! Unless I can find a large size hat then I don’t bother with them. My head doesn’t look overly large but when it comes to one size fits all hats… I am definitely excluded!
