David Lynch Directs Dior’s Lady Blue Shanghai

Here’s the long awaited Dior film written and directed by David Lynch. It get’s released to the world in about 8 hours, so, don’t say I never get things in on time!

Starring one of my favorite actresses, Marion Cotillard, the film takes place in Shanghai. Dior approached Lynch asking him to make a film for the internet, anyway he wanted it just had to have the Dior bag, the Pearl Tower and Old Shanghai. Not knowing what the Pearl Tower was, Lynch discovered that the building was inspired by a poem about pearls falling on jade. From there the ideas for the film started flowing[*]. Watching this, there are so many Lynchian elements, dreamscapes, the blurring between imagination and reality, the beautiful weepy heroine, and the blue rose. Of course, the fashion is impeccable, I can’t get over that beauty of the dress Marion Cotillard wears, a fitted grey dress with beautiful detail on the neckline. The bag…well I’m very bag-challenged, and incredibly indecisive on what I really like when it comes to the schlepping accessory.

What do you think of the film?

There’s always something about David Lynch, I think especially when I’ve seen him direct fashion/commercials, that always has this extra cheekiness… that makes me wonder the whole time if he’s mocking the work or taking it that seriously… like the Gucci Commercial he did several years ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt9gZUqKWbM). He always has this cheekiness in his work, especially Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet era, which these definitely harken to…. but it seems to push it a little bit further….

I’d call it more of a purposeful dramatacism than mockery.

This is beautiful work. I love Lynch’s direction.

These are collectible things, the small fashion videos by great directors. I am collecting them, anyway. Very beautiful and accessible and not screaming advertisement. Small and slow and seductive. I blogged it too.

Thank you for posting this Jennine!! First in love with Lynch and all the mood and details that he carries with his work, even down to Marion’s blurred nails.. He is one of my biggest inspirations, each frame is a continuation into a world of wonder.

And well it is a given love Dior and the bag ;)

I found the video itself a bit dull, apart from Cotillard’s voice which is completely hypnotised. x

I’ve been watching this campaign and I have to say, I think this is the worst of the three installments. The film style, the hotel — blech! So awkward. She is so SO glamorous and the cinematography and editing make her look like an amateur. And they don’t even showcase the bag that much. Really too bad how anticlimactic this turned out to be.

Thanks for posting it, though – Closure is good!

David Lynch and Dior… You would think the only thing they share is the D, but as you’ve already said, it is extremely Lynch-esque and manages to make the bag an item I want, even though before the film I didn’t find the design very attractive.
What I also find very interesting is the shift towards the Asian market. This is where the spending power lies these days. We Europeans or so old world…
