Girls Night Out: Sex and The City 2 Review

sex and the city 2

I’m not going to pretend that you are just finding out Sex and The City 2 has just came out. I bet a lot of you are excited, and a lot of you are on the fence about going to see it. Admittedly, I was on the fence, but the lovely people from Sarah Jessica Parker’s perfume SJP NYC treated me and three other ladies of my choosing to go out on the town for dinner and a movie. It provided the perfect opportunity to go and see the movie, and look there is a packed theater on a Thursday night (that and the line waiting for the next show wrapped around the lobby)

Sequels have a bad rap. If a sequel on it’s own is even tolerable, it becomes almost legendary, take for instance, the three sequels that are actually good: The Godfather, Part 2, The Empire Strikes Back, and Terminator 2. Ok all boy movies. And for the girl movies, we have terrible sequels, on twitter many of you voiced that Grease 2 was terrible (I liked it, but was a child when I saw it) and Dirty Dancing 2.   Perhaps that’s why I had such low expectations of Sex and The City 2.

Having low expectations can be a good thing, in a lot of aspects of life. I was a fan of the television series, but lost interest towards the end. I didn’t see the first film in the cinema because of all the hype, but liked watching it at home. One of the biggest complaints was the blatant consumerism in both the first and second SATC films. I found it to be cheeky, and a majority of the outfits to be more like ‘Real Housewives’ than any kind of style I would find inspiring (though I do love Carrie’s tiered dresses, both the blue sparkly one and the orange pleated one)  and of course Wendy’s Cleopatra earrings, I wore the matching necklace.

The plot lines were entertaining. As a newly married woman, I relate to the theme of marriage and family. How do people deal with settling into real life? What happens after you say ‘I do.’ For me, getting married was one day, and the rest, well it’s a whole other journey. The film stayed true to the series with the problems each of the characters had, Carrie wanting to keep the sparkle in her marriage, Miranda and her job, Charlotte and her nanny and Samantha and menopause.  The only thing was the movie seemed to go on forever, seriously, it was Lord of the Rings long. I’m surprised I sat through the whole thing, it must mean I’m getting old, because I never sat all the way through a three-hour movie.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. To tell the truth, I liked this one more than the first one. Is it a great film? Not really, but it’s not supposed to be.

Here are the ladies I went with, Kiri, Morgan and Christina (also from Profresh Style)..they all look fabulous. We got the soundtrack to the film and a Comopolitain set, I gave it to the one who knew the most SATC trivia, Morgan, she was on top of all the facts!

Here is the SJP NYC fragrance, it was nice, and it didn’t give me a headache, it kind of smells like candy which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how much candy I want to eat that day.

That long, eh? Wowsers! I guess I’ll give it a go… when it comes on DVR. I always sneak wine into theatres, but I don’t think one bottle we be enough for a sad husband and myself for that long!

I’ll admit it, I am one of those people who is dying to see it. It might be because there is no movie theater where I live and the closest one requires a ferry ride and another 50 bucks in gas. : )

Um, I didn’t realize it was that long! Hopefully I will be able to see it within the next couple of weeks.

Tami May 28, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Like you, I lost interest in the series towards the end. I liked the first film (come on, it’s a chick flick, can’t take it too seriously). I think I’ll wait until the crowds die down before venturing forth…

Poochie May 28, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I want to see it but am not dying for it. I think it will be fun. I’m dragging the poor hubby to go. I don’t think I’ll tell him its 3 hours, though. Yikes!

jennine May 28, 2010 at 1:30 pm

oh yeah, definately don’t tell him!

I loved the movie better than the first as well. I’ve been reading many mixed reviews, most negative.

WendyB May 28, 2010 at 11:20 pm

We laughed our asses off! It was a good summer movie — nice to get my mind off serious stuff and just be amused.

I’m going to see it today, and like you I have low expectations. I just hope it’s not what I’m afraid it will be, that all the fun and drinks and fabulous clothes don’t make them look even older than they are… it came across that way a bit in the preview, or maybe I was just scared by Kim Cattral’s cosmetic surgery ;-)

Sounds like you all had fun! If I had been there I may have scored the set, I know a lot of SATC trivia ;-)

I am going this Sunday with all my girlfriends! I can’t wait. I don’t care if it is cheesy or bad- I spent so many years with the ladies of SATC that I will love just seeing them in action again! I can’t wait!! xo

I saw it yesterday, and I actually liked this one much more than the first one. The first film didn’t stay true to the series as much as this one, imo. It was all about the girls and their normal shenanigans, and that’s it. . I guess I felt like this was more of an extra long episode of the show, and the 1st one was more like a drama. Oh and I was cracking up through the whole thing.. it really was hilarious…

on a style note… Miranda was no where near as fly on the show as she is in both movies… hmm, oh well…I respect her new found fly-ness, nonetheless.. I LOVED the white outfit and straw hat she wore to the spice market! Chic, chic, chic!

All of this goes to say, I enjoyed it! :)

I couldn’t have said it better myself — that is exactly how I felt about SATC 1 and 2! I thought it was like a fun party/trip, much closer to the series in spirit than the first movie, which was drama-heavy and not so fun on the fashion side. I thought SATC 2 was much more whimsical, but both movies, fashion-wise, miss the mix of the high and low, the old and new.

Glad you had fun! I went last night and had a real blast - it’s like taking a 3 hour mini-vacay!

MarchMusings May 31, 2010 at 6:49 pm

So glad to read you liked Grease 2. I do too and have never met another person who does till now! I liked it because of Michelle Pfeiffer. Going with my girlfriends for SATC 2 next weekend. Can’t wait.

This is a random thing to say, but I am enjoying the fact that you took a photo of the audience in the theater. Everyone’s faces, what they’re doing/eating/talking to/wearing…a visual microcosm of a very specific moment in time.

Kristin May 31, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I’m right there with you. I went in not expecting the world and was happy I went. And the orange Halston…LOVED!

Cecilie Harris June 1, 2010 at 12:21 am

The film is what it is, and for me and my friends I went with we had a fab night and went out of the cinema feeling our money was well spent and we were one big lump of girly inspiration richer than when we came. Great, feel-good movie and I got everything I expected and more.

your mate, kiri, has such a great outfit on. loving the blue coat with the red and the scarf. and adore the eyewear too.

Retro Chick June 1, 2010 at 7:07 am

I’m actually glad to read that you liked it!

I’ve been reading so much vitriol about it that I was a bit confused! To be honest I’ll probably wait for DVD like I did the first one, as I don’t really have anyone who’ll come and see it with me, unless I fancy an afternoon to myself in the Cinema!

I do have a competition to win a cosmopolitan kit on my site at the moment though!

Also for those of you who are on the fence, keep in mind that most of the vitriol is coming from male reviewers. I kind of couldn’t believe the bashing that went on and how hypocritical it was. Like, SATC 2 is so unrealistic, but Avatar (male spooge-fest) is not? C’mon, guys.

I can’t get myself to watch it, I already miss NYC so much, this movie may send me over the edge.

BTW thanks for your sweet comments and all your support over the years! I may not be commenting as much but I’ll still be reading :-)

Go with a bunch of girl friends, leave all your critical faculties at home, have a cocktail or two and enjoy. Go with your husband or boyfriend, stone cold sober and have a twenty minute snooze or leave early!
