In 1994, I packed up a backpack, and a small trunk and boarded a Greyhound bus in San Diego, destined for Newark, NJ (my aunt lives in New Jersey, and she just had a baby). I had $2,000 and no plan, but wanted to live in New York City. Suffice to say, it ended up that I had no money, surviving off just a daily slice a pizza or bagel and enough money for subway fare. In my memory, it was the year I was terribly poor and homesick.
Fifteen years later, I started making regular trips to New York. I always had a great time, since there are so many wonderful people there. I didn’t really think I wanted to make the move until one month when I made two trips. It took a year, and a few moves to other cities, and several more trips to realize that my heart of hearts I really wanted to live in New York. Besides, Wendy and I are going on the professional jigsaw puzzle circuit, it’ll be a lot easier to train if we’re in the same city.
So it’s happening. I kept it quiet until it was absolutely certain. The movers are coming, the tickets are bought. We’re heading out on Tuesday. This is probably one of the most exciting things because it feels so right.
Besides, where else could I have lunch with Olivia Palermo?
During Fashion Week, I was invited to a lunch by Style Bistro, and happened to sit next to Olivia Palermo. Now, I’ve never seen The City and was kind of embarrassed. After admitting it to her, Olivia said it was probably better I’ve never seen the show. She was really nice, and we had a really fun chat. She even offered to help with the move and suggest neighborhoods I might like. How nice!

Sad you’re leaving us here in SF but really happy for you (and a teensy bit jealous!) Can’t wait for your new adventures : )
Congrats hun! You just gave me hope that you can always go back to where your heart is! I lived there 2 years ago and with the turn of the economy I had to return home, I lost my great design job and was struggling to make ends meet. I am back in my home town but my heart is in NYC and I sometimes feel like I will never make it back, but you are my light and the end. Thanks! This really made my day! I will return to my heart that was left on west 34th and 6 ave!
You Can Always Go Back!

I, too, lived in New York when I was rather young and basically remember it as being a time in my life when I was more broke then ever. I was only 19 and have no regrets, but rather look at it as a valuable learning experience for future moves.
