You Go G/IRL

One of the things that never ceases to inspire me is the accessibility of tremendous talent online, and how the internet is a vehicle of expression. Next week, G/IRL - Women Photographers Emerging in Digital Culture, a gallery exhibition of 12 young women photographers who use social media to establish themselves in the industry. Photography is a very tough industry, because everyone can take photos, especially these days with DSLR’s standing out from the rest really depends on how much perseverance you have. My first husband is a photographer, and I remember his early days (before the internet was a part of daily life) of working temp jobs and taking pro bono jobs just to build his portfolio. It wasn’t easy, and it took a lot of dedication to get established. It’s probably pretty much the same thing these days with bloggers too, or any ‘dream job’ for that matter. The mere fact that they have used social media as a way to gain exposure, instant feedback, and have started a career at an early age marks a clear shift in an old profession.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this exhibition in real life. Original photography expresses so much more in person. It’ll be interesting to see how different photography that was made with the web in mind translates. Besides, maybe I can pick their brains on how to improve my own photography!

I agree, sometimes I look at what people can do and am utterly amazed. I love the shot of the woman on the beach wrapped in the flag, absolutely stunning.

The girl with the doll photo is brilliant. What a great exhibition on the whole.
