Shiny Black Sequins

by jennine on November 10, 2010

sequins

Since I’ve moved to New York, being dazzling has moved up the list of priorities. Not that I didn’t like dressing up before. But dressing up before would often mean being dressed up in a room full of casuals. New York is way more dressed up, much more than I previously thought. It was then I realized I had no night clothes anymore. I’m in my 30’s, I like to snuggle on the sofa and go to bed early. Yeah, I don’t mind being a square! That’s how I’m able to be online and blog all the time! Oh dear.

So rather than signing myself up for What Not To Wear, I had better get me some glittery, only comes out at night clothes. It really hit me when WindowsPhone invited me out to see Katy Perry. I invited Wendy Brandes to be my date, so I had to look nice!. I had no concert clothes. So rather than over thinking it, I stopped by Forever21 on my way home (yeah, yeah, it’s been YEARS) to get something with sequins. I found this black sequin dress that I could wear with a blazer and some other shiny bits that I got recently, like the Club Monaco gold metallic scarf with some Betsy Johnson cashmere socks. (hey, I gotta keep warm).

Lately, it’s been hard to take outfit shots. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of foot traffic and it’s hard to get out there with a tripod and take photos. The lovely Monica Shulman of Ciao Chessa! offered to help out, and it was a lot of fun!

Wearing: Sequin Dress: Forever21 • Blazer: courtesy of Juicy Couture • Scarf: Club Monaco • Socks: Betsy Johnson • Shoes : DSW • Rings; Wendy Brandes (Diana and Asterisk), Erin Watson for RVCA, Heirloom Vintage.

I have a similar dress I picked up @ Buffalo Exchange - I figured at the very least I could wear it for my co. holiday party. I’m not yet sure how I’ll style the layer over it since it’s short sleeve as well but it was nice seeing your version.

That bike is adorable. Is it yours?

you look fabulous! I’m glad to see you gave the OTK socks another go. The look really great. I really need an oversized sequin dress like that. Maybe I’ll luck up and stumble across one at my local F21. We all know that no two F21’s will ever carry the same merchandise.

Oh, and I really adore all your rings…

The blazer and rings (go head Wendy B!) really do it for me. I am glad you decided to “dress” up. But sexy casual is also a more subdued way to look put together.

oh and btw, I forgot to tell you that a few weeks ago I bought a black and white striped sequins top at F21. The sequins are on the black stripe and I wore it out with black skinnies (from my new cheap fave ON!) and suede heals but now you’ve inspired me to wear it during the day like you’ve done here. maybe next week for our next shoot I will bust it out for daylight wearing. x

I’m a NY transplant and miss the norm of bedazzled dressing as opposed to the casual comforts of Nashville! Though, I still wear sequins whenever I please, it’s usually met with more attention than I anticipate. :)

Wow! I love this outfit! I think that it’s monotone makes it really elegant, but still sassy enough for a night out. I love the vintage tapestry bag too-such an unexpected addition! I can sympathize with not having a lot of “night out” clothes any more… I’ve had a couple of times in the past year when I’ve had to scramble to come up with appropriate outfits! I guess I’m too much of a square too anymore… lol. Seeing this is making me want to pick up a 60s sequin top next time I see one in the thrift shop… just in case!
