Today’s Attire: Vintage Shearling

by jennine on December 6, 2010

Last year, after hearing horror stories about how cold Chicago winters could be, I started grilling everyone I knew about what kind of coat to buy. Lauren from Second City Style suggested I invest in a shearling coat, which was confirmed by Wendy who had a shearling coat for several years. I didn’t have the money at the time to invest in something new, so I checked out vintage options. I picked this coat up out of desperation when I was home for Christmas in California thinking shearling was cheaper there because it’s harder to sell, and this coat cost me $68 at Wasteland. At the time, I liked it ok, it was the best/cheapest I could find, but I didn’t love it (which is why I didn’t show you last year), and as soon as temperatures rose again, I tucked it away.

When it became apparent that I’d be doing another cold winter, I had plans to alter this coat, change up the collar, shorten it… I don’t know, make it ‘trendier.’ But when I tried it on again, I liked it so much more than anything else that’s in the stores today, it’s not that shearling aviator collar that’s on every other girl on the streets. The aviator collar is a good look, but there are so many other ways to wear shearling, and this is one of them.

It’s true that it’s super warm, it’s snowing today, and I’m able to wear a silk chiffon wrap dress with a single cashmere cardigan and a pair of tights and still stay cozied up. It definitely was worth $68.

Wearing: Coat: Vintage 70’s • Dress: Diane Von Furstenburg • Sweater & Scarf: Club Monaco •  Hat: Pinky Otto • Glasses: Target • Jewelry: Necklaces: Madewell • Tights: Betsy Johnson •  Shoes: Aldo

I love how well this piece pairs with other neutrals… I’m not sure if it’s because the dress ties it all together or what. But it looks beautiful with the black and cream and grey…

Wow! That was a great find-even if it didn’t seem like it at the time. Isn’t that funny how if you put something away for a couple seasons and then revisit it, it grows on you? I’ve had that with a couple pieces that I’ve only been lukewarm about, only to find they become loved staples the next time ’round!

this is a great look, jennine! My mom has a fabulous shearling coat from years ago that’s the warmest thing around! I’m hoping to steal it from her closet when I’m in Chicago for the holidays. It’s rather similar to yours in length and the collar is slightly similar. It’s definitely not the trend version that’s out on the streets but a more classic version. I also really love this dress and hat! you look fabulous!

What a great find - you and your friends must have a fashion-forecast-radar, that would probably cost you 4x that now (at least)! Jealous ^_^

That is a beautiful coat! And you’re right, I like the collar much better than what’s popular now… essentially because this feels so much more authentic in light of the trend. I wish I had had a shearling coat back when I was in Boston! Also, that dress is absolutely beautiful as well.

This is the nicest shearling I’ve seen - and it looks so cosy, being REAL sheepskin (can’t abide the fake stuff that people have been getting around in). Thank goodness you didn’t alter it, sometimes all you need to do is wait a little while :)

This is a great coat and looks so good on you! I’d say you’ve got excellent bang for your buck! I am not normally a fan of shearling but this coat is simple, not trendy and ridiculously chunky, and yes, I like that collar. A sound investment!

What a bargain for $68. I hadn’t thought of shearling as a stylish yet warm option for a cold winter. It looks fabulous and actually quite dressy. I have been so obsessed with the shearling boots this season that I didn’t even think of a coat. Vintage would be my route, too, both for economic and environmental reasons.

I’ve had a shearling jacket at the back of my closet for years. I wore it to death back in the 90s, it is a 70s vintage from my mom. I think it might be time to get it to the dry cleaner and give it another try.

I love the length on your coat. And I can’t believe you got it for $68. What a steal.

It’s funny how we can can gain a new perspective on something. I do that all the time with things like fashion and food. Hate it. Wait, I love it. =)

I love the length of the coat-it even has the ‘military’ influence with the buttons. So glad you didn’t alter it!
