Début: An Emerging Talent Boutique

debut new york

Falling in love with Emerging talent can be a mixed bag. On one hand, there is nothing more exciting than spotting a designer that flourishes and really develops over time, on the flip side, it’s so disheartening to fall in love with something that turns out to be a flash in the pan. I used to get really into searching out new designers, back in the days of IQONs and Myspace where emerging talent would post their wares online and make show their friends who often had equally as great work. These days, it’s finding a boutique like Début in New York where Lisa Wiess scouts out emerging designers who create amazingly high quality pieces with an unbelievably fresh edge to them.

The boutique has a modernist interior that displays it’s wears like a gallery, showcasing each designer and listing out the influences of the collection on a plaque like you would see in a museum. Good for those of us who like a little story to go with our wardrobe, and great for those who want more of their wares than ‘it’s cute’. It also gives the boutique a more curated feeling, where you can browse through the pieces with a bit more care than you would in a regular shop. Of course, the price points are at the more contemporary and luxury levels, but in this atmosphere you know it’s definitely worth it, as it sure beats scouring the internets for the latest emerging talent of the season.

My favorite pieces were by Mawi, who has been around since 2003, and has a knack for mixing edgy and lush.

The Orly Genger has a wonderful sense of knotting!

I must be on a bracelet kick… will let you know who did this in a bit…

Susie Bubble was wearing a Brook & Lyn necklace during fashion week. These are amazing!

I’ve never seen  Timo Weiland’s collections in real life. The mix between classic and the playful prints (this is the backside of a cardigan) is so fresh!

Here are a couple of bags… Oh my… so much for coveting a basic black bag…

This place looks amazing! I always love finding fresh new designers but totally feel you that it’s sad when they seem to flop. The bags are especially incredible!

Those bags are awesome! Fun and functional. I’ve come across the MAWI line a few times online and I always like what I see, I just can’t afford most of it.*

*There is a MAWI ASOS collab available online on sale that is much more budget friendly but you lose a good amount of the flair and detail that make the line so interesting.

I, too, love supporting emerging talent. You often get better value for your money as well as the product of a new creative mind.
