Austin Vintage: Feathers Boutique

by jennine on March 15, 2011

When you’re out of town, hitting up the vintage shops is always a treat. Mostly because they always seem to have a bit more local flavor than the regular boutiques that carry the same labels as everyone else (unless it’s a locally produced label). I’ve kind of waned a bit from vintage as of late because I’ve lived in expensive vintage cities, New York, a pair of vintage shoes will set you back at least $70… which is fine, but my last pair had a sole that peeled off on the second wear. Bummer. Know a good cobbler downtown?

Instead of hitting up the SXSW interactive conference things in Austin, I decided to go on a shopping run with Pamela from Market Publique and Ashley from Fashism. Grechen from Grechen’s Closet had recommended hitting up Feathers Boutique on the trendy South Congress Strip. I went with my broken shoes in mind, but was delighted to find a wonderfully curated boutique with fun vintage wears and a whole lot of Texas charm. Of course the boutique isn’t all western themed, but I was in the mood, so looking around for belt buckles, cowboy boots, and fringes galore. They also had local jewelry designer Via Christa who made solid brass jewelry from a muskrat scull. Woah. Weighed a ton, but damn it looks cool.

I wish I’d known about this place the last time I was in Austin!

Sounds like it was a lot of fun. I’ll have to add shopping at vintage stores on my next trip!

We so enjoyed hearing you speak at the conference. I love visiting vintage shops when I travel for the same reason you mentioned, there is always a local flavor to the stores you don’t see at home!

Really looks like a neat little gold mine….definitely my kind of place:)

I love venturing in the “out of the way” types of places….that is where you usually find the BEST goodies:)

So sorry I didn’t make it to the conference. I WILL be at the next one…hook or crook to meet you:)

Thanks for covering this! I have been looking for a place closeby that had more than one pair of Cowgirl boots! Many vintage shops have one or two pair and so far…they are not in my size. I will check this place out next time I am in Austin!
I hope you saw my message about your keynote speech…it is my blog post today!! Thanks for all you shared..

The necklaces are amazing and I especially love the arrowhead! It reminds me of one I had as a kid that I got in/around Yellowstone.

If it were possible to steal the beautiful gold necklace and scarf in the first picture, I’d be doing it… right about… NOW! ;0)

That looks like an amazing shop. We don’t have tons of vintage stores near me. I tend to just stick to the thrift stores, I find tons of vintage stuff though. Did you end up getting anything?

Love all that stuff. And it’s awful that I haven’t found any vintage shops in any of my many trips. I should do some better research , I;m losing too much

I am so into vintage lately, too, and it is also one of my favourite things to do when I’m on vacation. I notice that depending on where you are the prices vary wildly. Vintage in New York, for example is sold at quite a high premium.
