Often times you’ll hear luxury goods branding their “Made in Italy” or “Made in France” badge with an pride. Well, we pay the high prices because they’re made in xyz glamorous country by artisans with a pastoral verbiage telling the story about why we need to love something so much. I say this with sincerity, because I do love to hear how something is made, and love it more when it’s made with care by someone I’ve met or in a place that I love. But I feel some places get the shaft in credit for their craftsmanship. Once I bought a Native American beaded choker “Made in India.” I kind of chuckled, made by the other Indians. This season Prada has gone to the edges of the globe to pay homage to artisans outside of Italy.
“Made In,” this season, Prada has produced leather goods made in India by expert weavers to create the beautiful textured woven pieces. They are by Miuccia’s account the best in the world of this particular type of leather weaving. This is particularly my favorite of Prada’s collections in a long while as to me, the texture is ultimately fresh and the colors vibrant and very wearable. I actually bought the shoes below, but am kind of going through this thing on whether I should keep them. It was my first luxury purchase, and it’s kind of a long story why I can’t keep them… more to do with investing in shoes now or a life later… you know the drill. Anyway, I hope to see more of this “Made In” series, word has it on the street that in the fall we’ll be seeing Indian embroidery. Can hardly wait.

Lave it to the very smart Miuccia to make this cool … and I think it is. Italian designers were heretofore having many designer high priced pieces made in India but labeled that all important Made In Italy.
One world, I like it.

These are gorgeous! And I love the strong mixing of colors.
Oftentimes goods are all but made/assembled in a country other than France, Italy, etc. but then one minor touch, like a handle or shoulder strap, is attached in another country (like Italy or France) and the “Made in France” label is affixed. It’s nice to see Prada’s transparency with this collection. I had no idea and I’m glad you wrote about it. I too am in love all the woven pieces and was unaware of who made them until now. Thanks for reporting!
Thanks for sharing this..I, too, love to hear the story of how and where things are made and don’t mind paying a higher price for knowing that something was made by hand w love by a skilled craftsman etc.

I love the weaving on the bags…but the shoes are awesome! It helps to understand pricing when you can see the craftsmanship in the product!!

Absolutely great-if you can swing it, I would definitely keep those shoes-so beautiful and unlike everything else out there that all looks the same. I love the woven edging on the handbags. I’m glad too they are being transparent about who did the work.

Sometimes the Made in Italy products only have a small percentage of the item made there, just enough so they can boast the label. This endeavour by Prada is nice because it might have the residual effect of improving livelihood of these artisans.

Wow! Those are absolutely beautiful. It was really a surprise that they’re made in India. That’s fantabulous! Actually you can find a lot of woven items made by the cottage industries in Asia. In fact in my country, lots of woven stuff ranges from pandanus to leather are woven, even could rival Bottega Veneta. They’re awesome.
