Wearing Black and White Stripes

by jennine on June 13, 2011

Horizontal stripes are hard to wear for some people. I always feel like they make me look bigger, but when other people wear them… holy moly, stripes look fantastic! Picture Coco Chanel in her French Navy shirts, Prada’s current season, Acne has stripes galore. They’re everywhere! So, while trying to adapt my wardrobe for New York weather, I noticed one big thing missing were summer dresses for work. After working from home for a number of years, and not having a proper hot summer… I really wanted to have more sophisticated and chic dresses to wear for meetings or for just being comfortable.

Over the weekend, I stopped by at Zara, after getting a snake print dress which is really easy to wear. Figuring that they would have other affordable dresses, I ended up getting two more with the similar 1960′s tent style. It’s been a gamble because firstly, I’m not used to wearing dresses with no waist, and secondly stripes are hard. However, if fitted correctly in the arms and also the stripe gradation really makes for a flattering statement dress. I love it.

Over the weekend I finally did the Sally Hansen leopard print nails. They’re so much fun! Here I’m holding a vintage copper medallion of with the Native American engraved whale motif. I really love this particular style, as it doesn’t get much attention in fashion… it should.

These shoes have become my stand by shoes, really comfortable to wear in the city, and stylish enough to make an outfit come together. Who knew a shoe with a spindly heel would be that shoe!Wearing: Dress: Zara • Shoes: Tracy Reese • Necklace: Vintage • Bag Pendelton • Sunglasses: Super

I hardly wear horizontal stripes for the same reason! Love these on you though, they don’t make you look like an elephant at all :)

Definitely doesn’t make you look bigger. I’d say petite! That’s a great design, simple and chic.

I never considered tent dresses because I thought they’d be unflattering, but this looks fantastic on you! And those shoes are so gorgeous!

I love all your accesories, especially the rings. That motif on the medallion is unique, I agree, it should be used more often but then it might not be as special.

Love this entire look, particularly in love with the shoes, amazing colour! Have the same feeling about horizontal lines, love them and always wonder whether they work, see them on other people, get inspired and they end up on me. Fell in love with a stripey stretchy skirt at zara, but these set of horizontal lines were just too cruel to wear ;)
The medallion is seriously interesting, and agree that theme hardly ever gets reproduced in fashion, shame that xxx

I so understand you! yep, horizontal stripes are “complicated”, but not on the upper part of your body (at least that’s how I do them). Love your outfit, and those accessories are amazing! not to mention your nails! to flashy for me, but you’re looking fantastic!!!

Wow, those shoes are great - red is nice with black and white. I’ve always like black and white horizontal stripes because it is oh so French, like the movie Breathless.

I think the stripes look SO sophisticated. No horizontal widening effect whatsoever :) In fact, I know it’s commonly said that stripes can do this to you, but I never seem to really notice this effect on anybody. Maybe it’s just me?

I am usually very careful with stripes, having not the most perfect body after 3 kids made me redesign my wardrobe :) Stripes on the top is better than stripes on trousers though :)
Anyways you don’t seem to have any problems like this, the clothes you are wearing look absolutely amazing, especially those shoes!
