Copying Looks From the Street: Asymmetrical Black Dress and Denim Jacket

by jennine on June 30, 2011

street style denim

I’m a shameless copy cat.  I’ll copy anything that tickles my fancy, and not afraid to say so! Last week on Eat, Sleep, Denim we featured a look from the street, an symmetrical dress with a denim jacket worn as a cape. The look really stayed with me, and when I went to go to the Norma Kamali sample sale, and came across this modal asymmetrical dress. Had to have it. Here I’ve recreated the look in my own way. Not having a denim jacket big enough to wear as a cape (it must be a jacket that’s too big), I just wore it normally. I also discovered that it’s easier to wear jersey dresses with some kind of layering if you have some bumps you’d rather not share with the word. Ahem, I have them.

How often do you copy looks from the streets?

Hey nothing wrong with trying on a look inspired from someone else. It’s how the fashion world rolls!

SACRAMENTO June 30, 2011 at 1:01 pm

I think it is the best compliment of all…
YOu both look fantastic.

Ashe Mischief June 30, 2011 at 1:03 pm

I’m not gonna lie… I think I like your version better! The dress is a bit longer, the jacket more fitted… just a bit cleaner and more modern looking!

Imitation is the best form of flattery. I actually really like your version of her look better. So I guess it is more fashion inspiration than copying. I could definitely see myself wearing this look. Super cute. =)

There is nothing wrong with being inspired and imitating what you like! I love this outfit and has inspired me to wear my really old asymmetrical black skirt!

You look mad fab in that photo! I like your version better honestly because I enjoy the length of your skirt and that you actually wore the jacket (even though the cape thing is dope also)

I probably get inspired more by street style than magazines these days… Yup! It’s hella cool.

I’m out! Toodles. lol

It’s not copying, it’s ‘being inspired by’ and it’s all good!

Love the combo of black jersey with blue denim, and I think the length of your dress looks better than the original version!

I LOVE this look, but I need a new denim jacket. I think mine is too boxy/long. I really like yours & saw a similar one at Gap. Thanks!

Well, don’t you just look FANTASTIC. I think I prefer your take on it because of the lengths of your jacket and dress. I’m also a copycat, although I’d like to think of it as “inspired by” ;)
