From Dud to Staple… the Denim Mini Skirt

by jennine on January 30, 2012

denim mini skirt

Last year, I purchased a Blank NYC denim mini skirt on sale some place, and it went to the back of my closet. The past few weeks, I’ve been wearing this denim mini several times. Like, Friday, Sunday and Monday. It went from dud to staple. To be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve like mini skirts at all. But this winter, It feels right, as NYC is mild with California like temperatures. It also makes me feel feminine without being to frilly. I thought for a while I’ve gotten too old for a denim  mini skirt, as I’m hitting 37 in a few weeks. But what the hey, who cares? Anna Dello Russo is in her 50′s and wears minis all the time.

Here I’m paring a denim mini skirt with thick tights, tweed blazer and silk tie front blouse. My booties are hard to get out of, as they are the most comfortable things, and when you’re busy at work and live on the 7th floor with no elevator… sometimes comfort is king.

Wearing: Blazer & Tights: Uniqlo • Blouse: Aritzia • Skirt: Blank NYC • Booties: Rachel Comey • Bag: 3.1 Philip Lim

Jennie, you look great! But is there an age when the mini should minced from one’s closet? I’m in my 30s, I feel like it’s ok because I’m really petite so there aren’t miles of legs (sadly) coming your way. But I think if one of my taller friends wore it, it might look a bit ‘hoochy’. What are mini-musts and must-nots?

What a great look. I love a good looking and practical outfit. Those booties look amazing and I’m happy to hear comfy for your needs throughout the day! It always helps when fashion is also comfy. =)

Good call on reviving this little gem. It looks great on you. I think the color makes it kinda timeless. Let’s be honest, other hemlines come and go, but the mini is always in style.

…and pish posh to fashion rules dicated by age. If you love it, work it! Besides, you’ve got great legs.

It looks great on you!

I’ve been rediscovering old denim trends too - it just feels right to be experimenting now, doesn’t it?!

I say, if you’ve got the legs for it and keep the rest of the outfit relatively conservative (as you’ve so elegantly done here) - no age-cap on the minis!
I do love the stitching detail on it - gives it a bit of an edge.
