Edgy Girls Wear Pearls

Pearls are tough.

And not the kind of tough that will help you win a knife fight.

On one hand, they’re classic and timeless. On the other hand, they can get stodgy real quick. Finding a good piece of pearl jewelry that doesn’t look like you lifted it out of your mom’s jewelry box (although that wouldn’t be bad either!) is easier than ever these days.  With so many fantastic designs with pearls, it’s hard not to jump in and get something that’s both classy (yes, I used the C word!) and edgy at the same time.

This year has been a great year for the pearl. With Chanel’s SS14′s oversized pearls, and the Mise Dior en Tribal earrings, oversized statement pearls are a force to be reckoned with. And it’s not just the big design houses either: Fallon and Delfina Delettrez included pearls in their edgy-chic collections this year along with several other designers, making this the year of the pearl.

One collection off the beaten path I particularly loved was SMITH/GREY’s “the pearlgatory” cheekily described as:

The Pearlgatory, a place of purification and temporary punishment. Only those who die in the state of grace can be in Pearlgatory but no one will remain there forever”

A collection that combines religious iconography, with elements of punk and bared down modernism. Very clean and understated lines, yet not your ordinary pearl necklace or ring. I really fell in love with this collection, so much, I wouldn’t mind if I remained in “pearlgatory” forever.

And if you have any doubt that pearl jewelry has been resurrected, these edgy pearls will give you faith:
