Since my return to blogging, I’ve been rather fixated on the idea of “Timeless” in part because I’m tired of chasing trends. What’s going to be the next “It” bag, should I run out and buy those Birkenstocks because everyone has them. What is “me” and what is the fashion hamster wheel?
Well, the quest to define “Timeless” style cannot be done without researching the past. Looking through old images of some of the most iconic women of the past century, it’s really amazing what can actually be worn today without looking like a costume. Certain silhouettes and color pallets appear decade after decade. It’s beyond my own personal tastes and what I’ve noticed in my own life, but what works for others as well. The truth is, we’ve only been publicly documenting our own wardrobes for the last decade or so, so indeed much of the historical images will be of famous people. Still… it’s truly inspiring to see what still resonates.
I love Judy Garland’s dress here.. also her hair and makeup.. but also… LOOK AT BABY LIZA! Those eyes.

LOVE THESE IMAGES JENNINE! AND YES INDEED, THESE LOOKS ARE TOTALLY IN TUNE WITH WHAT’S GOING ON IN STREET FASHION RIGHT NOW. WE ARE RETRO OBSESSED AND FOR GOOD REASON, AS THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY WAYS CLOTHES ARE LOOKING GOOD AND MAKES SENSE ON A BODY. THINK ABOUT IT. IN FASHION WE ARE LIMITED TO WHAT WE CAN PUT ON THE BODY AND ALTHOUGH COUTURE IS AN IMPORTANT BAROMETER FOR THE EVOLUTION AND CREATIVITY OF STYLE, WE TEND TO GO BACK TO WHAT WORKS ON A DAILY BASIS AND THOSE ARE THE CLASSICS THAT WERE INVENTED A CENTURY AGO, WHEN WE MOVED AWAY FROM DICTATES AND CASUAL BECAME THE NORM.
I once participated on a Tweet-chat on ‘what makes one iconic’ and I think you said it Jennine with “it goes beyond personal taste”.

I’m *pretty* sure that the woman in the white suit with the camara is the sartorialist’s mom. He has some pretty awsome vintage pictures about his family.
